Water spillage disaster on laptop! What to do?

Ds and dd managed to spill a cup of water this morning all over the table and, of course, the laptop was sitting right next to it.

I thought I had mopped it up and didn't realise that the computer had got as wet as it did as ds had moved it before I got there.

Dh comes to switch it on an hour and a half later and there was still water dripping from it and it won't switch on.

Have again mopped as best I can and there is no longer water dripping.

Have given a blast with the hairdryer and it is now sitting in the sun, tilted in case there are any more drips.

Is it likely to ever work again? What is the best thing to do to attempt to coax it to work?

Might be worth removing the battery (to prevent any short-circuit if there is water between the contacts) and making sure it is dry.

I've been using a USB keyboard on a laptop where someone spilt wine in... A few keys work, but very few below the number row give the correct letters.

Battery lasts only a few minutes (15 at most, if laptop doing nothing) so running on mains charger.

It would have been about 50 quid to replace battery and over 70 for a new keyboard (plus a lot of effort to remove flaky one and put new one in place, a 5 quid USB keyboard was better option for me - esp as I prefer a full QWERTY keyboard with number pad).

Yep, agreed remove the battery and just let it dry out for a day or two.

I've spilt coffee on mine and washed it - was all fine.

At least it was only water, and not as corrosive as some liquids (eg cat's pee) or sticky like wine / milk.

Thankyou.

It's good to hear that it might not be terminal!

Will give it a couple of days and see how it is.

The battery wasn't brilliant anyway and it only worked when on mains power.

My biggest worry is that I might now have to share my laptop with dh and the dcs!
