Are we facing a HUGE bill when we get home from holiday.

We are in the US on holiday and whilst i was out shopping DS(2) decided to have a massive tantrum for DH. In order to calm the situation DH hooked his iphone (with the flight mode on) up to my dad's wifi and downloaded Postman Pat for DS to watch.

I haven't a clue about iphones, wifi etc and need some reassurance that i can enjoy my holiday. I'm 6 months pregnant and completely stressing that we will face a massive bill on our return home, all for the sake of bloody Postman Pat.

Can any iphone / wifi experts help me?

um, I don't have an Iphone but my sister does and she said accessing the internet on it from abroad can turn out pretty expensive. But that probably means relatively expensive, not mega expensive. So like £10 or something to watch PP?

Firstly you can't have the iPhone on flight mode and wifi at the same time. Flight mode cuts off all contact with the outside world.

Assuming flight mode wasn't on and he was watching it over wifi then there will be no big bill you can sleep easy

Hold on, when you say your dad's wifi, what do you mean exactly? Were you out shopping or at home? Did you download at home and watch when out shopping?

Either way, if it wasn't over wifi it shouldn't be mortgage sized expensive so I wouldn't worry too much.

If it WAS over wifi it should cost nothing at all. If you downloaded packet data throught the 3G network then you will pay whatever your phone provider charges for this.

Wifi is free. If he had his roaming off and was hooked up to wifi the it'll cost nothing.

Thanks everyone. DH was at my parent's house watching DS while i was shopping. I think from what you all say it should have been free, if not, not too expensive. DH will be pleased. I had threatened to sell the iphone to cover the bill [evil].

No idea how much data would have been transferred but at 6 pounds per MB () it can work out that one MP3 music track (4 to 5 MB) could cost 24 to 30 pounds if* using a mobile network not the wireless router.

Has parent's wi-fi got encryption on? If it has, and DH needed to enter some passphrase or 'key' to get connected, then there is a good chance of the connection being via wi-fi.

Can DH connect to mobile network website (from house PC, not iPhone) to check on billing info ?

Since March it has been possible for customer to request a limit on spending while roaming abroad. From 1 July it is meant to have a default level of 50 Euro if you don't set a limit yourself.

(*) O2 charges 6 pounds per MB outside Europe, 3 pounds per MB inside (though not sure if 'Europe' is just EU countries or all of Europe including Switzerland, Norway, and former Eastern Bloc + Turkey...

Other networks may have similar pricing, sorry, have not checked.

I used my iphone in France stupidly for maybe an hour or two, max. DH realised what I had done and emailed O2 (from my dads laptop). The bill for that was circa £175!!!!!!! I can't remember how much exactly as I have wiped it from my brain. Thankfully, O2 were able to apply their 'bill shock' service and all internet charges were dropped.
Phew.
