ive been useing the same email address since 99 and have some lovely mail messages that i dont want to lose. its always been something i have just checked online, but have recently discovered the joys of outlook.
does anyone know of anyway to get them onto my computer? outlook wont do a yahoo address for some reason, either that, or i cant work out how to.
any advice appreciated.

Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express? If it's your own machine and not being used for work purposes then Outlook Express would probably be the better bet.

Outlook Express can certainly talk to Yahoo email accounts, I'm pretty sure that Outlook can but it's a bit more fiddly to set up.

You could just forward the emails to your other email address?

i cant really, its a work one, and i;d rather not have othe people able to access it.

What version of windows are you on? You might have something called Windows Mail?

There's also a further problem, it sounds like Yahoo might not allow the sort of access that email programs require unless you have a paid for Yahoo account.

However I've got free accounts and can access them fine, so maybe things have changed recently as my accounts are all pretty old.

First of all try following the steps here:
www.khimhoe.net/2009/09/01/how-to-setup-yahoo-mail-in-outlook-2007/

If that doesn't work then you might need to follow the instructions here:
www.askstudent.com/techtips/how-to-access-yahoo-mail-using-microsoft-outlook/

That will involve installing an additional piece of software called YPOPS that will give the access that Outlook requires to free Yahoo accounts.

Are you allowed to install your own software on your machine if it's a work thing?

As a final low tech solution you could also just copy and paste the emails out from your browser and into a Word Document...

thank yo ubadger, will try the stuff you have suggested.
i could do the cut and paste too. hadnt really thought of that. just didnt want to print them off, but that would work too. as an electronic copy. its stuff like c ongrats on birth of baby, who is now nine, birthday wishes for toddler who is now a teenager. advice and love from dad on life and work, stuff he isnt abel to do now.

You can get free e-mail accounts at Google and elsewhere, so I would suggest forwarding the mail out of Yahoo and then think about copying it onto your own PC.

At least that way you have two copies before you even try to copy to the PC...
