I'm marking undergrads on (a) a final project and (b) an essay.

The Final Project is worth 70% of the grade.
The Essay is worth 30% of the grade.

If a student gets a 68 for the Final Project and a 77 for the Essay, how on earth do I do that calculation!

Please explain. Marks due very soon!

Thanks if you can help!

I think it would be:

(68 0.7) + (77 0.3) = 70.7%

I assume the 68 and 77 are %?

Briefly

0.7 x 0.68 + 0.3 x 0.77

= 0.476 + 0.231

= 0.707

= 70.7% (so I guess you round up to 71%)

You might want to check on your calculator that I've done the sums right, but that's how you do it.

ChocolateMoose · 09/06/2010 17:45

Ah good, we both got the same result.

grumpypants · 09/06/2010 17:48

two different ways both get 70.7%
I would use a calculator and do (68 x 70%) + (77 x 30%) = score

You are all amazing.

I was trying out fractions and x's...but was a disaster.

How sad that all those years of maths at school were for naught.

I am not marking maths, you may be relieved to know.

Thank you again.
