Be careful in the sunshine with your new toys, mine has just stuck a warning sign up and told me it's too hot to use!!!

I've put it on charge in the house but it doesn't bode well as a sunbathing assistant. No Reading downloaded books on holiday then!

Felt sure I read that on some website a few days ago. Although I have no plans to get one, there's a lot of info online, so might be worth perusing a few geeky sites just to get their insights on the pros and cons... Or was it someone on an iPad thread on MN ? Might have been, I never keep track of hundreds of snippets of info about gadgets that can be read on Engadget, etc, etc...

I googles it when it cooled down And lots of people had the problem.

I won't be using it on the beach this year, strictly an indoor toy.

Bit of a shame - could mean it won't catch on in place of some e-book viewer as it won't be the ideal - mind you, given the cost, it is perhaps safer for it to be kept at home - like Walkmans in the 80s when they were 'new' - an iPad would be quite tempting for a thief to remove and while it might be possible to shut it down (once home with access to serial number etc) I bet there will be dodgy dealers around who will sell a bunch of 'nicked' ones in a street market and disappear from that town not to be seen again for a couple of years.

What do you expect, the iphones had problems with batteries exploding and catching fire as did the iPods, not surprising really as they are made by Foxconn who not only have a bad rep for quality (anyone remember the Xbox PSU recall) but they all so have awful working conditions that have resulted in 7 suicides and 1 death so far this year alone.

NetworkGuy · 06/06/2010 01:48

Hang on, Ryoko, while there may well be problems at the factory concerning working conditions, it's not just Apple that has had problems with their batteries in recent years (and must admit I don't recall it getting as much coverage {I knew nothing of iPhone / iPod batteries exploding until your post} as Dell, Toshiba and HP have had with laptop batteries)

Catching fire while on a plane was bound to cause some additional concern and get reported - and recalling millions as a fire risk is not cheap, so that again would have been news-worthy.

Here we're talking about having some slim black unit which clearly has been crammed with electronics and I bet many other tablet computers will also suffer overheating and close-down if they are used in the sun for a while. The fact the iPad has not been out for long is perhaps the only reason overheating in sunshine has not yet become well known, and is somewhat divorced from any manufacturing plant conditions, unless you've some links which suggest otherwise.

FWIW, hasn't the record of France Telecom been causing concern as suicides are being reported in what should be a far safer working environment, but where stress of possible redundancy might take some 'over the edge'.

NetworkGuy · 06/06/2010 01:56

Just did some searching and found this ZDnet report that suicides at Foxconn are actually lower than the national average for China.

Meanwhile this ZDnet report compares Foxconn with France Telecom's 46 suicides (I only knew it had reached the top 20s in late summer last year).

As far as I know Foxconn didn't make the exploding laptop batteries I think that was actually from one of Sony's own factories.

they are however well known for making stuff which is well made but with bad components, before the Xbox recall they had a bad reputation with PC PSUs.

(Microsoft had to send out millions of replacement power cords with cut out switches on them due to Xboxes catching fire, I've got one it's a massive thing with lights on it but I don't have a dodgey PSU Microsoft used several companies and didn't keep track of what batches contained which PSU so had to send new cables to all).

Just had a look and Foxconn has had 10 suicides and 1 death this year (guy died from exhaustion after a 34 hour shift), I'm not sure how comparing it to the national average actually works, I mean this is one factory, yes it is massive employing thousands of workers but the workers are all in the same boat, they all get the same pay which is spost to be pretty good for the industry, they all live in the same style dormitories and so on. So I don't really see how the deaths can be compared to the national average, it should really be compared with similar factories.
