A new addiction?

Ryoko · 21/05/2010 15:06

Good for you, see you in 213 hours time (thats how long I played it for).

Looking forward to New Vegas

Kevlarhead · 07/06/2010 18:08

Bloody hell, that finished a bit quick...

Roll on New Vegas...

It's not about the story it's about the freedom thats what sandbox games are all about.

Kevlarhead · 11/06/2010 21:31

I wasn't particularly trying to finish it, but got sucking in by the plot; I'd assumed after getting Liam Neeson to the water treatment plant there would be a load of tedious fetch and get missions; and it turned out I was 80% of the way through.

Although i did get about a lot, I felt slightly cheated after getting the Explorer perk and seeing how many places I hadn't seen. I'll have to go and restart it after I've got to level 30 and played through all the expansions...

DH has just finished this. More fool me, I introduced him to Fallout in the first place. I loved Sulik and his grampy bone.

Can you recommend anything similar for him? He's always struggling to find something he can get into. He liked Gears of War too if that's any indication of his sort of thing.

I'm more a Might and Magic kinda gal.

If you don't mind getting a bit retro, see if you can find a copy of Deus Ex. Shouldn't pay more than £5, and it's the daddy of action RPGs although looking a little dated now.

Oblivion was the template Fallout 3 was cast from; more of a fantasy theme.

Alternately you could look up the first couple of Fallout games, although they're more RPG than FPS.

If he likes his freedom to roam and do as he pleases he should get Red Dead Redemption, especially if he loves old spaghetti westerns like I do .

Alternatively if it's RPGs he likes, Dragon Age: origin uses the same game engine as Fallout3 and is basically Dungeons and Dragons story wise.

then there is Mass effect 1 and 2 for the star trek fans if he don't want the old D&D style.

ShowOfHands · 14/06/2010 23:50

Thank you for your suggestions Ryoko, have noted them down and will have a look tomorrow. RPGs are better tbh as I like them and am more inclined to let the hours of game playing go semi-unnoticed if I can sneak a go myself every now and then.

We have all 3 Fallouts and Oblivion and Deus Ex.

Computer games are a good Father's Day present, yes?

Ryoko · 15/06/2010 22:06

I wouldn't really call Fallout 3 an RPG, I'm from the old school, brought up on Japanese RPGs if it isn't turn based with random battles it's not really an RPG.

ShowOfHands · 15/06/2010 22:42

I love turn based. Never got into any games until I played Might and Magic 7. And 8. And 9. Turn based makes so much more sense to me.

The thing is whenever I go to any stores and ask for recommendations like M&M, they always recommend stuff that is nearly all battles and no questing. Is there anything like M&M out there? I like that it's as much about building up skills and questing as building up armour and fighting.

Ryoko · 17/06/2010 22:34

I've never played it so wouldn't know.

Tales of Vesperia had alot of side quests in it but good like finding that it's as rare as hens teeth, maybe Fable 2 might be up your street it's not turn based but there is a lot to do, maybe even invest in a Pokemon title.

Actually what about trying a strategy RPG like Disgaea, the third one is on PS3 and there are ones on DS and PSP.

Turn based titles are not that common now, the west don't like them and Japan is trying to appeal to the west now.
