A couple of days ago I had my facebook password changed without my knowledge, and today I got a message on my googlemail account to say the account has been accessed from indonesia.

ARGH. I use that email address for paypal, ebay, online banking, my bills, my memberships of stuff...

I've changed the googlemail password, should I be doing anything else?

I think you should change all your passwords.

Should I tell any official type people, in case something has been done in my name?

If I was you I would contact the bank and let them know your suspicions.
When this sort of thing happened withus they were really helpful (lloyds) and stopped about £4000+ worth going out. Some had gone before we got to the bank,, but they increased our free overdraft and paid it back within days to our account.
Is paypal connected to the same bank account? If so, dont worry, the bank will stop payments.

It may mean that you get phone calls for afew days every time you use your card, but it is worth it.

If anything is done via a bank they will inform the fraud investigators and it is all left to them to do all sorts of checks.

Will do. How could this have happened?

Run an indepth virus and malware scan.

It could be a keylogger, so download Spybot, which detects any keylogging software.

When this is done, then change all passwords.

Also check all bank accounts, ebay etc and keep an eye on them for the next couple of months.

I use two computers and a blackberry-does that need doing on all three?

OP posts:

It can happen at any time, and usually through Internet Explorer due to the huge number of security black holes.

Dillie · 14/05/2010 20:26

Sorry x-posts, yes on both computers, but not sure about the blackberry

We use firefox, although we have been having probelms with the laptop lately and have had to reinstall windows three times in the last month.

Something to try to avoid is using the same passwords for different websites.

You may want to create a brand new e-mail account that you use only for PayPal and your Bank and not for personal e-mail or any other websites.

Make sure the password has a combination of letters and numbers (and if you want to have some punctuation like . - or even ! [so long as they are accepted by the website] it makes the changes of being guessed much lower).
