Ending Mobile Contract Early

I signed up for a 24 month contract with O2 in March 2009 and need to cancel it at the end of June 2010. I know I will have to pay out the remainder of the contract, but can anyone tell me if I can keep my phone? I want to sell it to try to offset some of the cancellation charge. Anyone have any idea?

Yes the phone is yours unless you're on some weird rental thing that I've never heard of!

AnnieBeansMum · 08/05/2010 12:47

That's what i was hoping, but wanted to be sure.

Now, oh wise one, how do I get out of paying the penalty??

Hmm. Find some mug to buy the contract off you at a reduced price maybe?

AnnieBeansMum · 09/05/2010 18:54

Cancel finding a mug to buy it!! I just had an e-mail back from O2. Because I have never used my full allowance in the 14 months I have had the contract and because I am emigrating - they are going to waive all cancellation charges!!! Sweet!!

Omg!! I didnt expect that! Nice one!

Good news. I was wondering how (or if) a transfer of contract might be achieved, given the number of people I've seen walking away, sad to have had their application turned down in a couple of stores in town.

I assume that they are just being far more strict on who they offer credit to (given the contract length is normally to cover phones costing anything from 400 pounds up).

Hmmm. What model phone ? Will you be selling it on Ebay ? (Sorry, couldn't resist !)

Samsung Tocco F480 - and yes, it is on e-bay! Here

Aaaargh... sold before I had even checked the listing.
Well done, and hope all goes smoothly with your move.

Are you hiring a 40 foot container for belongings? (A friend went off to live in the USA a while ago, and at the time we both worked for a transport consultancy, so knew plenty about the shipping lines... her move to North Carolina went well, anyway.)

AnnieBeansMum · 11/05/2010 14:09

I can't believe how quickly the phone sold!! Must have priced too low.

We haven't hired a container. We are setting absolutely everything and have only shipped 3 boxes back to Canada with items that we weren't prepared to part with. It is a complete fresh start in Canada - literally.

Wow! Good luck with the move, and with the selling off - it's a great idea as a way to start afresh... or is it "going back" ("3 boxes back to Canada" where I may have written "3 boxes off to Canada")

Which part of Canada will you be going to, if you don't mind?

I spent a great break (as my birthday present for myself, after years without any foreign trips) in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and ending up at Niagara Falls.

Have wanted to go back, to see a bit of the West Coast too.

AnnieBeansMum · 12/05/2010 13:03

For me, it is "back to Canada" as I am Canadian (good spot, btw) and my DH is "off to Canada" as he is English.

We are heading to a small town about 60 miles west of Toronto. Although I went to uni in Ottawa and have dreams of eventually moving back that way.

Had a great tour of Ottawa with someone from a firm there (at the time, 20+ years ago), who had been a student there, so knew the high and low spots

I really enjoyed Ottawa and (as a non driver) the public transport was very good - funny seeing the double doors for the bus shelters in the centre, but found VIA rail efficient if not always speedy - efficient in terms of reserving a seat and not too expensive at the time. Lots of friendly people across Ontario.

As I was there in late March before the tacky shops opened at Niagara Falls, I was a 'rarity' being a visitor when perhaps few are expected. Stayed in a nice hotel, given a guided tour of the place as I was only visitor (!) that week and could choose any satellite TV station I wanted.

Hope the move goes well. I'd love to live over there for a few years (I generally prefer cold to hot weather-wise, though know some parts do get very cold, of course).
