Why does my yahoo email say I've got unread mails when I haven't?

I know it is a minor matter but if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

In the box on the left where it lists: inbox, sent, drafts etc, a few weeks ago it started having a "1" in brackets, indicating there was one new email. Today it suddenly says two. But when I go to my inbox to see the emails listed there aren't any new ones.

Or, the brackets will say (4) but there are only 3, or from today it will be 2. If you see what I mean!

I have ticked all the boxes and put to "mark read" so that I know there can't be any I have somehow missed.

I don't know what's going on and it is just a bit annoying.

So boring but I'd love someone to give me the answer. TIA.

That is a bit odd. I know I've seen it showing "1" when I have viewed all messages, but that seems to get sorted out if I refresh the window, or view mail on a new tab in the browser (I think because of the way they have split the page up, and the left portion doesn't always get refreshed properly, unlike Runbox, FastMail or GMail... typical Microsoft!)

Your situation sounds like there is some counter showing 1 and then new items add and read items subtract but always leaving this "1".

I wonder if it can be reset by opening mail on two separate windows, then on one, sending a new message to yourself, and just closing the web browser window. Then, on the other window (which shows '1' but does not know it should show '2' now) go to the inbox, read the new message, and see if it wipes the '1' out.

If it does, problem solved. If not, then it sounds like it's held in the mail database and the only way to remove it would be to report it as a bug for them to fix {sorry}

Know it isn't "major" but can also see it can be a nuisance, too.

Oh, rats, you're using Yahoo! and it is years since I have used my old account. Well, hope the "open two windows" method might fix it. Clearly not a Microsoft issue, but a Yahoo! one if it still remains "stuck" showing "1".

Is there something unread in a subfolder?

RedLeaves · 30/04/2010 01:15

WebDude, I'm afraid your "open two windows" was beyond me but I do appreciate your trying to help.

WingedVictory I shall check out the subfolder situation.

Thank you both .

Most web browsers have an option to open a second window. With Internet Explorer, you might get a second window using CTRL (control key) + N (older version, eg v6, used File / New / Window off the menu but that is hidden away these days).

On Firefox you can create a new tab or a new window on the File menu. Making a new window allows you to view a different website.

If you are comparing prices from two online shops (eg comparing TV sets) it can be handy to have more than one window on screen (helps if you have a widescreen display for your PC or laptop).

Sorry if I took it for granted, but I hope you do try opening a second window sometime, as you could find it useful another time.

Webdude you are being very kind

I have re-read your posts and I have just tried what you suggested. I have opened up new windows before but hadn't really thought about it.

However, when I read the email I had sent myself and went back to the home page or whatever it is the bracketed number did go down one but only down to (4) which it now is.

It had been on (5) you see.

It is really wierd how the numbers are creeping up!

So do you think I should email yahoo?
