Ringtones for iPhones are a right pain in the arse.

If you have bought the song you wants as a ringtone in iTunes, select Store at the top then Create Ringtone. Follow instructions on screen.

If the song you want is one you have bought from elsewhere or ripped off a CD etc then you need this next set of instructions.
First - first the track you want.
Now, right click on it, select Get Info. Now under options, there should be a Start Time box and an End Time box. Select the part of the song using this that you want for the ring tone. IIRC, it can't be any longer than 40 seconds.
When you have your 40 second clip sorted, click on Advanced at the top then Create AAC Version.

No idea whats with your computer though. Is it otherwise running normally? Try shutting the program down through Task Manager or a restart if that doesn't work.
You'll now see a new copy of your song underneath the original. Right click and select, Show in Windows Explorer.
Delete the copy from iTunes library but not your computer.
Now rename the extension so that instead of .m4a, your file now ends .m4r. Now open that file in iTunes and it should appear in your ringtone folder.

Oops. Paragraph about your computer should appear at the end not in the middle.

Many thanks, I got as far as show in windows explorer but then you lost me, I don;t know how to rename the extension!

Still can't get back on the internet online either - bugger!

Right click on the file and select rename, just type in filename.m4r with filename being whatever the name was before.

Describe exactly what you are doing in a step by step fashion and what, if any, errors pop up.
