I'm thinking of buying an ipod touch. I know this may be a daft question to I apologise in advance. If I want to access my google mail do have have to be connected to the internet?

Yes, it does

BadgersPaws · 16/04/2010 10:33

Actually the answer could be no, it depends on what you mean by "access".....

You can set up the Mail application on the iPod Touch so that it can access your Google Mail account rather than using the web browser to get to it.

This is a much easier way of reading and sending emails then doing it through the browser.

It also means that you can read your current set of emails when you're not connected to the internet and even reply to them (though the replies won't be sent yet).

When you do connect to the internet the iPod Touch will update itself with the current state of your Google Mail Account fetching new emails and sending any that are waiting in the outbox.

This is particularly handy if you're out and about and need to check an email that you've already received for something like an address.

So if "access" means "read emails that I've already received" then the answer is yes.

If "access" means "get new emails that have been sent to me" then the answer is no.

Argh, that last bit went wrong....

So if "access" means "read emails that I've already received" then the answer is that you can do this when not connected to the internet.

If "access" means "get new emails that have been sent to me" then the answer is that you cannot do this when not connected to the internet.

you can only recieve your email when connected to a wifi network. WHen the emails have been downloaded you can read them at any point, some will not load correctly ime.

BadgersPaws · 16/04/2010 12:09

If the email message contains elements that need to be downloaded from the internet (the classic example being images in an email from a company, emails from people usually attach them rather than reference them on the internet) then those elements may not appear.

So for example if you get an email from eBay it might look a bit odd as the images may not appear when you're not connected to the internet.

Again this only applies if you're using the actual Mail application.

If you're using the web browser (Safari) to get at your email then you've got to be online to see anything.

I agree with BadgersPaws - I can see emails that I have already got when connected to the Internet when I am offline, but can't remember if I have to have actually opened them first. Will check.

Also I find that with some wifi connections that I can only access gmail through safari.

BadgersPaws · 16/04/2010 12:55

I don't believe that you need to open the email to be able to read it offline, though if there are links to images on the web then that's most probably going to be different.

Many public WIFI connections do block email applications from working, and often other applications too. So in that case you do drop down to using Safari and get at the mail that way.

I have an iPhone and get Googlemail on it using the Mail app, not website.

BadgersPaws · 16/04/2010 13:49

We're only talking about having trouble getting the Mail App to talk to providers, such as Google, when using a public WIFI point and an iPod Touch.

On an iPhone if the Mail app can't get to the mail system via a WIFI connection then it will fall back and use the phone network.

An iPod Touch can't do that so on some (many in my experience) public WIFI points the Mail app will refuse to work.

At home on an iPod Touch the Mail app works just fine with all sorts of email providers including Google.

MerlinsBeard · 16/04/2010 14:36

SOrry, i wasn't clear. I meant that as long as the email is there in the mailbox you can read it. You won't be able to recieve any new ones when not connected though.

(I have gmail and ipod touch
