I'm constantly moving around and therefore using various computers. Is there a decent website for bookmarking out there? I'm fed up of loosing half of my bookmarks when I move about and just want something I can access anywhere and add new bookmarks too.

Thanks

I've been using Opera v10 which allows for machines to be synchronised (bookmarks, notes, and a few other things) on the basis that only you use these other machines.

If that's not the case, then maybe worth considering use of some portable application (I think you can put a 'portable' version of Firefox on a USB stick, similarly for Opera).

Don't know about Google Chrome having similar flexibility. As for MS Internet Explorer, I expect to see pigs flying past the window before they could get their act together.

I use the google toolbar, as long as you're signed in you can access your bookmarks from any computer.

Oddly enough, Google Chrome doesn't support the google toolbar...

I use delicious find it very handy as you can tag bookmarks, and browse other users and find new stuff.
I like wists too for keeping track of present ideas for me people.

Molesworth · 12/04/2010 21:59

Another vote for delicious - that's where all my bookmarks go

PorphyrophillicPixie · 12/04/2010 23:31

Thank you

I've heard of delicious but never dnoe anything about it, I apparently have an xmarks account too (provided by a firefox app) but have no idea how to use/access it!

I'll check them out tomorrow and start uploading my links! It may take weeks

Oh, can you put bookmarks into folders on delicious? My PC is hyper disorganized and I love my folders...

No, on delicious you organise your bookmarks using tags rather than a folder structure. I find it better than folders tbh: my old-style bookmarks used to get in a terrible mess

CaptainNancy · 13/04/2010 15:19

I always used delicious previously, esp as it integrates with firefox. Am on mac though now, so use nothing currently [cba]

Molesworth · 13/04/2010 15:20

The delicious firefox integration is excellent. Love the popout sidebar.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 13/04/2010 17:06

Hm, s'pose I'll have to get used to tags. Not necessarily a bad thing, I just like having flders within folders within folders

LeninGrad: Does it have folders?

OP posts:
PorphyrophillicPixie · 13/04/2010 18:04

Ooo, folders!

If you change the folders on xmarks, will it sync it to your pc? And can you upload links directly to xmarks? What do I do with my laptop once I move back to it too? Just install xmarks onto it's firefox?

Thanks

Actually if I had heard of xmarks before I heard of delicious, I may well have gone down that road instead. I've got used to delicious and the tags idea. Tbh I find adding tags far less hassle than creating and managing folders. But xmarks looks like a good tool too

I've just logged in to double check this because I thought I was imagining it. On delicious you can group you tags into bundles... so sort of like folders.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 13/04/2010 23:47

Easterbilly: Why did ou think you were imagining it? Am a bit curious now, are bookmarks a secret non-sopken about thing like swmnbn or something? (Don't actually know who swmnbn is tough, google didn't have the answer!)

I think I'm going to play with delicious and x marks and see which I prefer

Thanks for the help!

I still think using portable apps worth considering.

If ever xmarks or delicious servers are offline you cannot access the bookmarks.

If their servers have disk problems, you've potentially lost all bookmarks permanently (sorry, but can / could happen).

Backup bookmarks off a USB stick every week or two and I'd lose a lot less info built up over a year (or ten).

That is a possibility with delicious WD, but I've been using delicious since 2006 and have never not been able to access my bookmarks. It's also easy to export bookmarks from delicious for backup purposes.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 14/04/2010 10:53

Where are your bookmarks on your PC/laptop? I consider myself relatively good with compuers but I've never taken the time to explore that aspect of it!
