DD managed to pick it up this morning. Couldn't get rid of it. How safe is it to download an online fix? Is that just using a thief to catch a bigger thief?

Please please tell me! Before I smash the bloody screen.

I gues it depends where you download the fix from - have you checked sites like Norton etc to see what they say about it?

OrmRenewed · 08/04/2010 19:42

Good point soupy. We have norton on our laptop. Will give it a go.

In the past I've found their database of "removal" info very helpful

bumpybecky · 08/04/2010 19:51

BIL has managed to get this and DH is trying to fix it at the moment. He's found something at Symantech I think. He won't have paid for anything to fix it, but not sure where he's up to. He's currently bathing littlies, so better not ask as then he'll know I'm MNing! Will ask in a bit and post again....

Arse! I thought I had got rid of it with StopZilla but it's still there and StopZilla now is demanding money too!!

Am seriously considering taking it to the computer shop and having it fumigated. But apparently that involves reloading Vista at 73 a shot! And they want to charge us for saving all our music and photos etc.

Buggering buggery bugger!

Have found instructions on loads of site of how to do it but they are all way to complicated for me.

Have you tried Malwarebytes?

OrmRenewed · 09/04/2010 12:20

Thanks bubbles but I am reluctant to download anything else now.

Have found another shop who are going to have a look and won't charge us more than £40.

For future use, with no fees to pay, I can recommend checking on www.SaveMyButt.com for the downloads section. Things like Ad-Aware and AVG (free) can be used. I'd avoid anything which you didn't actively search for or that a trusted friend has recommended.

All too many of these spoof 'security warning' things are actually to get you to pay for junk software (or worse, something which is a virus or attempts to log your use of PayPal, banks, and so on).

As for spending up to 40 quid... well, I hope that's the first and last time, for your pocket's sake (and I do assist clients with the odd virus but tend to get them to install free utilities if possible, and if I spend an hour online checking their machine remotely, the cost is a fraction of 40 quid).

dd1's got clogged with this last night. We were weeping and wailing because her extended project and A level work were blocked. After finding out (from an old thread on here) that it wasn't harmful and just bloody annoying, dp spent an hour or two following instructions/downloading from Malware.

bubbles4 · 09/04/2010 12:51

I have used this before and it is good and it always works for vista.

OrmRenewed · 09/04/2010 13:28

Thanks everyone.

I just want it gone! But I will learn my lesson. Not sure where DD got it from - problem is when it came up with it's initial scary warning she says that didn't ask for help (not that DH would have been any ) just followed the instructions.
