If it's internet explorer:

Click on tools
Options
Security
Restricted Sites
Sites

If MN is in there, delete it. If it's NOT in there, then it has been probably been barred across the server rather than on just your machine - in which case, sorry there's not much you can do.

MayorNaze · 05/04/2010 16:10

thank you - will give it a go later am fairly certain i am only mner at work so harsh

Oh same for me... just this last week i've beeen getting that timed out message thing too at work

Facebook is still available and loads more people waste time on that then I ever did on MN.

BadgersPaws · 05/04/2010 17:34

You could try turning off the Proxy Server, if your browser is configured to use one.

Various browsers do this in different ways so if you can't find out how to do that post back with what you are using.

WebDude · 06/04/2010 13:30

Best check company policy before poking about - messing with PC security might have unwanted consequences!
Hint: a formal warning, perhaps?

StealthPolarBear · 06/04/2010 13:32

turning off proxy / messing around with settings may be against IT policy so be careful

StealthPolarBear · 06/04/2010 13:33

I'd sack anyone buggering about on chat forums at work.Disgraceful.

WebDude · 06/04/2010 18:49

Not sure, moondog, if that's written "tongue in cheek" but it has been an area where I bet there'll be cases of some boss asking one of his staff to book a flight / hotel / tickets on their behalf, and would not mind the member of staff using the net during a coffee break or lunch hour, but the second the member of staff using it for something at some other time, and there's some other thing going on (downsizing, problems with their work / health / attitude), they are being threatened with disciplinary proceedings...

Seems to me employers and employees need to get use of the internet clearly defined both on what and when and how long to avoid any ambiguity.

Biggest disaster area in the past was use of a company e-mail address. If you want to share jokes etc with friends, then use something like a free Yahoo! account and when it comes to Twitter, FaceBook and other things, buy your own laptop, or use a mobile phone and only spend a half hour on it during the day, out of the office, so there's no chance of being accused of timewasting or abusing internet access for personal use.

WebDude · 06/04/2010 18:52

SPB - timeout can be one symptom of 'blocking' - it's quite easy to set things up so the outgoing request goes into a black hole (ie no reply, no 'denied' response, just no answer so the application requesting will give a timeout error message).

No, it's not tongue in cheek at all.
You are paid to work ,not mess about on the Internet.
If I were the boss of a big company,I would free it up over lunchtime then shut it off.
If you browse the internet in work time, then oyu are taking the piss.

MayorNaze · 07/04/2010 13:35

may i point you in the direction of my disclaimer. perhaps i should have been more specific. i do not mn when i am supposed to be working.

OP posts:
moondog · 07/04/2010 13:49

Makes no differnece. You are messing about when you should be thinking about work.
I would sack you.

MayorNaze · 07/04/2010 13:56

when i should be thinking about work?

right, i will review SOP manuals while i have my lunch next time...

big brother is watching you...

If it's just been blocked and wasn't previously then it's likely it's come up in a list of "sites people waste time on" (not officially referred to as that but you know what I mean). I'd be very wary about trying to get round it as they'd notice if it popped up again in the next list.

At my old company the managers are sent round a list of which employees spend the most time on the internet and which sites they visit.

Get in iPhone - tis the only answer!

SuSylvester · 07/04/2010 14:03

its blocked at mine
but am hoping for iphone so no prob

MerlinsBeard · 07/04/2010 14:06

If you are the only MNetter in your office and its been blocked then they think you spend too much time on it.

I agree with moondog that you should be working at work. MN is just another social networking site really when you think about it.

WebDude · 09/04/2010 13:16

Sorry, but while I agree on the principle of not wasting time during work time, one has to compare what people do with a degree of balance.

For example, if I was in an office where half were smokers and went out for 10 minutes every 2 hours, without working any extra hours to make up that time, should the others get paid extra for the time they don't go out for a smoke, or could they do something different, too ?

On the whole question of using the internet while at work, I see it not as a right, but a privilege and expect it be monitored.

Using a work e-mail address for personal use is not something I would condone (and why sackings can be justified when bringing the company into disrepute), but if someone wanted to look at MN in their coffee break, I don't see it as a problem, so long as they do put in the hours they are expected to...

WebDude · 09/04/2010 13:21

NBN - problem with any lists of sites is that as different sites are blocked, other sites will appear as the most common, or getting most minutes (a silly concept, in my view) and they end up blocking pretty much everything.

If they happened to block say Tesco or Argos or Asda let alone some unknown but useful site (like MetaCrawler) they could end up blocking half the internet. I know online shopping isn't high priority, but imagine when there's some "leaving do" and you cannot even look at Argos for something suitable... cos the silly s*d who is leaving authorised a block on it 5 years ago.

WebDude · 09/04/2010 13:23

Just to add - having seen some of the MPs have used YouTube, it will be funny to see that blocked under the Digital Economy Bill (now signed off) as a copyright infringing website!
