My Norton trial runs out today. Can anyone recommend another AV software, free or v cheap?

Thanks

AVG Free. Has never let me down.

I've got the AVG free stuff, and also Spybot
Various banks etc are giving McAfee with their online accounts, so I've got that as well.

MerlinsBeard · 03/04/2010 13:49

AVG

Granny23 · 03/04/2010 13:54

Another vote for AVG. Had it for years and it is excellent. Also have SPAMFIGHTER which regularly removes almost all of my spam. It had got so bad that I thought I would have to change e.mail address or go back to my much missed applemac.

AVG

BertieBottsChocolateBeans · 03/04/2010 13:56

AVG is great. It has just picked up a virus that malwarebytes etc hasn't touched with several scans.

You have to be a bit stealthy to find it though - search "AVG Free" in google (don't look through the main website) and read all the tickbox options etc very carefully before you click them, because they word them sneakily to get you to upgrade to the paid version

BertieBottsChocolateBeans · 03/04/2010 13:57

Oh or use ChasingSquirrels' link

BertieBottsChocolateBeans · 03/04/2010 13:59

Bucharest, you shouldn't have two AV programs installed at the same time, because they interfere with each other.

Bucharest · 03/04/2010 14:10

Oh do they? I just say yes, if someone offers me something free!
Which should I keep?

BertieBottsChocolateBeans · 03/04/2010 14:40

I have no idea, sorry! Perhaps someone else knows. I just know it's a no-no to have two running at once. Whichever one you decide to take off, make sure you use the proper removal tool as well (don't just use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel)

plonker · 03/04/2010 14:47

Another vote for AVG free

Bertie - I knew not to have both running (McAfee trial expired a while ago) but I removed it in the control panel - how are you supposed to remove it?

Bucharest · 03/04/2010 14:49

I've just updated and reinstalled the AVG as the one I had was an old version (lovely new shiny colours on the toolbar ) I'm going to get rid of the McAfee but I thought just add/remove was OK?

Will wait for someone more techy to advise!

BertieBotts · 03/04/2010 16:21

The McAfee Removal Tool can be downloaded from their website here(Scroll down page to step 2) - it just makes sure everything is definitely gone because antivirus software is a bit more stealthy than other programs, to prevent it being uninstalled easily by a virus or something. You need to do add/remove programs first anyway so at least that bit is already done

Bumperliciouzzzzzz · 03/04/2010 17:20

Thanks, have downloaded AVG, and uninstalled Norton which I wouldn't have thought to do. Thanks

plonker · 03/04/2010 17:29

Bertie - it says to navigate to where the McAfee was stored. I don't know where it was stored

Any ideas as to the liklihood of where it would have been stored

BertieBotts · 03/04/2010 18:35

No it's saying go to where you saved the downloaded file - it's a roundabout way of saying download this, save to the desktop, or my documents, or wherever, and then double click on it. Does that help at all?

plonker · 03/04/2010 22:05

Ah yes, that makes sense now. Thanks Bertie

HgDad · 05/04/2010 11:14

I've ditched Avg etc and now just use the free Microsoft one.

Normally I try and find a non-Microsoft alternative, but in this case the Microsoft offering is definitely the best - no nagging, no expiry, simple updates...
