I am going to get an iphone and just wonder whether it is worth paying the £125 for the 3GS or just getting the 3G which is free? Will I need the extra memory? I've heard you don't need a video as there is an app you can buy.

Also, I presume you use your wireless internet when you're at home but if you use the internet you're out and about do you get a bill for the internet usage?

If you "need" the extra memory is dependant on how much of it you're going to use.

I've got a 16gb iPod Touch and I find it a bit of a squeeze. If I then added in the iPhone's ability to take photos and video I think I'd run out of space pretty quickly.

But if you have less music (or in a lower quality), don't want so many apps on it and aren't going to take many photos then you could very well be fine.

I'm not sure about the video being doable via an app. The camera on the 3GS is better than the one on older models, more megapixels, and it can capture video at 30 frames per second. On of the video apps I've seen can only manage to make 15 frames per second. So not only can the older iPhones not match the 3GS in terms of how good each frame of the video will look but they also may not be able to match it in terms of how smooth it plays.

The 3GS also comes with Bluetooth (which you might use), more connectivity options (which you probably won't use) and a compass (which is quite fun).

The final big difference is that the 3GS is more powerful, it has a faster processor. On the whole that won't make that much difference other than the phone feeling a touch "snappier" as you move around menus. However it is possible that apps might start to come out that need the faster speed of the 3GS.

I think that's unlikely to happy soon, there's so many of the "older" iPhones out there. But do be aware you're not buying the latest version of the device.

I feel tempted to buy the latest version because I am going to be tied into the contract for two years as it is.
