hi, i am doing a presentation and trying to do a graph with 2 axis (one axis bar chart and a line graph with a different scale on the same chart).

i am sure there used to be a chart type that had 2 axis, but in the version of windows i now have there isn't... (i think i am on windows xp)

can anyone help?

thanks muchly, stressed in twickenham

Think I've gpt XP at work - the one you're after should be in 'Custom Types' tab under Line or Column - under 2 Axis

amidaiwish · 15/03/2010 13:37

that's what i remember but there's no custom types tab...
i'm in excel
insert chart
then just a list of types, column, line, pie etc...

It's not the version of Windows that's important but the version of Office, do you know what that is?

amidaiwish · 15/03/2010 13:42

what you need to do is insert the chart as a bar or line and then change one of the series data types. to do this right click on the data you want to change and select "change series data type"

amidaiwish · 15/03/2010 13:44

ok it seems to be excel 2007

When Excel starts a little graphic should pop up giving a version, for example it might very well say "Excel 2007"

amidaiwish · 15/03/2010 13:46

thanks MrC - am trying that now.........

MrCSWS's hint will get you two different types of graph.

However if I'm reading you right you also want two different scales/axis on the graph.

If you once again select the line/bar you want to change. Right click and select "Format Data Series" Under "Series Options" select "Secondary Axis" on the "Plot Series on" block.

That way you can now have a line graph with a scale from 0 to 5 and a bar chart working from 0 to 100, or whatever you need.

MrCSWS · 15/03/2010 13:56

on the money BadgersPaws. Forgot to explain how to do that part

amidaiwish · 15/03/2010 13:56

hurrah... ok i have got the secondary axis but now has the bars on top of each other, not side by side, and ideally i would have a line and a bar.

and now it has crashed

but i think i am almost there, thanks so much

I've got a bar and a line on a little demo spreadsheet in front of me right now....

It's all about clicking on the actual graphed out line or bars that you want to change the options for.

You sound close so good luck

MrCSWS · 15/03/2010 14:01

amidaiwish

you need to combine both of our hints (in either order.

i started by selecting a side by side bar, then changed series 2 to a line and then set series 2 to the secondary axis.

amidaiwish · 15/03/2010 14:04

ok great and thank you!

it is still "not responding" eek i hope i saved it recently.

am going to close everything else down, i have a lot open, see if that helps so signing of. thanks again.

Yes, sorry, I should have made clear that I was adding on to MrCSWS's solution and that both things needed to be done.

amidaiwish · 15/03/2010 14:31

got it! you are amazing (don't worry badgerspaws, i realised).
