HELP - my two year old has done something terrible to my brand new mac book...

There is a DVD already in there, and she has pushed another one in on top of it. It's trying to eject but can't. I can't get it out with tweezers, can only just see the very slightest edge of it.

Any advice very gratefully received!

anyone ?

turn it off, and start holding down eject before you switch it on again, and hold it down continuously IYSMIM

has worked when I've had one stuck before. just the one, mind .

BigBadMummy · 01/03/2010 21:33

on some dvd drawers there is a very small hole. If you poke a pin in this it should allow you open the drawer slightly.

This happened to me once and I have to say that I pushed the eject button, held the drawer open and then poked a ruler in to try and get the second disk down (it was stuck higher than the drawer if you see what I mean)

It did make the machine whir and I am not sure I would recommend it. It worked for me but since your PC is new it might be worth taking it to your nearest Apple store and asking them to do it for you.

Try:

Disrupt the spin

If you listen carefully, you can probably hear your optical drive powering up & down over and over again. As long as the disc spins, it?s not coming out. The first step is to get your hands on a very thin piece of cardboard or even a folded business card (so it?s twice as thick). Now restart your Mac and hold down the mouse/trackpad button as you poke the cardboard inside the SuperDrive slot. The goal is to slip it above the CD or DVD ? towards the left side of the drive ? and gently jiggle it around to put pressure on the disc. You might have to continue this for up to a minute or so, but it often works when all other methods fail.

cananybodyhelp · 01/03/2010 21:35

Thank you both - it doesn't have a drawer, just a little slit that you push cds into - gawd this is bloody typical...

Just off to try the holding eject thing, will report back!

lou - that sounds hopeful, will give it a try now.

Alternatively, turn it off, and start holding down the trackpad/mouse button as it starts up again.

cananybodyhelp · 01/03/2010 21:43

nothing is working - am I going to have to take it in?

Going to a terminal and entering the following two commands might help:
drutil tray open
drutil tray eject

Or you might have to open up the case.

Because of the curve on Mac laptops the drive is often positioned a little way away from the case so you can sometimes get a grip on a disk that hasn't gone all the way into the drive but is still beyond the slot on the case.

Oscy · 01/03/2010 21:57

I'm typing this on my Mac laptop as I speak and if my toddler did that i think it would be him i would be tweezing! (only joking). I looked at the back of mine and i would say the casing is very hard to open indeed, as the screws are so small, also it would be very obvious if there was any damage to the screws which would invalidate your warranty.
I would bring it in if I were you. Naturally I would feign complete ignorance as to what happened - "two discs, you don't say, how could that have happened" etc etc.

PigeonPie · 01/03/2010 21:59

DH is a Mac expert and I've just asked him. He raised an eyebrow.

Unfortunately, he says that ejecting it is just going to jam it even more.

His suggestion try to get hold of it with a stronger pair of tweezers, but turn the power off before you try.

Or you could try something very thin and plastic (but not a metal knife) and some sellotape. Push the sellotape folded over sticky side out (but not too much 2cm or so) with the impement on top of the DVD and see if the tape will stick to the DVD and then see if you can GENTLY ease it out. (does that make sense?) but again make sure the power is turned off

Otherwise, is there an Apple store near you?

PigeonPie · 01/03/2010 22:03

By the way - I would cry if either of my DSs did that and then they'd probably not see another DVD for some considerable time! DH would destroy the lot!

So poor you, you have my sympathy

cananybodyhelp · 01/03/2010 22:07

Doesn't sound good - I haven't even had it a week yet. God I could weep.

PigeonPie - does your DH think I should take it to the mac doctors? I don't want to damage it even more...blardy hell, this is something I really need for work. :[

Yes, if it's not coming out with tweezers then it's best left to the experts.

He does say to be as honest as you can. They know usually what's happened, so it's probably better to say that 'it's not coming out and you think your DC has put an additional disc in rather than not saying anything.

They're really lovely at the Genius Bar (well the one in Milton Keynes anyway) so give them a call. Let's just hope it's only the DVDs that are damaged.

At least you can still use it and MN!

cananybodyhelp · 01/03/2010 22:33

I'm on an old one, just so I can keep the new one switched off. Could you ask your DH if he knows if a warranty will cover it if it's fooked?

OP posts:
PigeonPie · 01/03/2010 22:57

He reckons that sorting out the 'problem' should be covered, but it depends whether the actual drive is damaged which may well not be covered.

Apple are pretty good at customer service so if you're lucky, they may well take pity on you as a gesture of goodwill - lets hope so.

I suppose the only thing you can do is call them in the morning (possibly sobbing) and explain what's happened and ask.

Do let us know.

cananybodyhelp · 01/03/2010 23:12

Thank you .

I will check back in. Trying to think positive.

Oscy · 02/03/2010 20:59

pigeonpie is right, they usually do know what's happened. my mac man (lovely, i love him) has told me a tale of opening a mac and literally spilling wine out of it. i did laugh. But rather unwillingly, as that will very likely be me at some point.
let us know how it goes and I do truly feel your pain.

cananybodyhelp · 03/03/2010 07:30

Hello everyone, thank you for all your help. I took it to my Dad's place of work yesterday as a last resort before going to the apple store in the hope one of the mac guys there could fix it, and one of them did!

So I am back firing on all cylinders.

The Shaun the Sheep dvd wasn't so lucky though, and is now confined to the bin!

OP posts:
PigeonPie · 03/03/2010 12:52

So glad it's all fixed. Enjoy your Mac and don't let DC anywhere near it!

cananybodyhelp · 03/03/2010 21:45

Its new resting place is on top of the welsh dresser (the top part). No chance the little rascal will be able to reach it up there!
