I've only had it since November and I've got another thread about an intermittent falling off the web problem too.

I shouldn't be able to hear the fan really should I?

Or is it a sign of over-use and I should de-register from MN ?

I have a very very noisy fan been like this for ages, still works does my head in.

LowLevelWhingeing · 14/02/2010 00:30

No, its talk talk here. But I don't think broadband provider had anything to do with the fan mechanics does it?

It's not usually this loud. Just tonight. And once a few nights ago.

It doesn't have anything to do with bb

If it suddenly BECAME really loud, then something can be wrong with your fan. Have it checked out, cuz if you don't and something is wrong, you can end up with having to buy a new power supply/hard drive/whole comp.

DP's 4 yr old macbook started doing this a couple of weeks ago.
Apparently he's ordered a new one for £15 on ebay (new fan not pooter that is )

LowLevelWhingeing · 14/02/2010 00:40

OK, I need to find a mac hospital then don't I?

Shit.

We got robbed of two macbooks. When we bought new ones, we only got the extra applecare for DP's (as his was a more expensive one and it seemed £££). Do you think my noisy fan will come under normal 12 month warranty?

Should do, aren't Apple pretty good for customer service?

giraffesCantCeilidhDance · 14/02/2010 01:10

Im buying a new one for my birthday - in a week

I can't say for certain about newer Macs but with older Macs you certainly can hear the fan.

The machine controls the fan with an attempt at a fair degree of intelligence, so if the machine begins to get hot it turns it on a bit, if it gets hotter then it speeds it up and if it cools down it switches it off.

I think it's well worth downloading a widget such as this:
islayer.com/apps/istatpro/

That will give you a whole host of information on the fan speeds and the temperatures of various bits of your machine and CPU usage.

When you hear the fan ramp up switch to your widgets and see what speeds the fans are and the temperatures it displays.

What BP said, and you might check to see if any applications are causing a high CPU load. I think Time Machine (?) is one of the ones my colleagues used to mention as being a problem.

Failing that, get a can of compressed air and give your laptop a good blow-through before spending any money on repairs or replacements.

ah right, I use time machine. It's not happened for a few days, maybe because it's not had such prolonged usage since then. I'll keep an eye on it for the times it happens.

thanks for all your help
