I just bought a cheapish one from Argos (had vouchers)

Its Canon and was about £40 for scanner/copier/printer , no idea how good the cartridges are but they came with vouchers for money off.

Was just about to say my Canon was shite, and the first time I replaced the (expensive) cartridges it never worked properly again, so I bought an epson and I love it! It's an all in one photo/printer/pcopier thingy.

But that won't be very helpful!!

god it is a minefield. i just want one that prints consistently and maybe even prints the whole page! and not jam every 5 prints! does teh paper you use make a difference?

I wouldn't have thought so, mine is el cheapo from the nearest pound shop!

My epson is also the cheapest one they had a the time, but I am really impressed, the quality is loads better than the Canon ever was, and I was a professed Canon fan before (man in John Lewis told me)

Hi I run a print shop so hopefully can offer you some good advice!
If your wanting to do brilliant photos then i'd suggest a canon as they have the highest resolution. They can be expensive to run but many place offer refills which are usually very good because the cartridge is just a tank.
Epson printers can be good but from my experience and from many customers experience epson are a bit of a nightmare. This only because the print heads are built in to the printer and not the cartridge so if you leave the printer for a length of time without use or in a hot room then the printer does not print again. As printer repairs are so expensive it means a throw away job. However when epsons work they are good but the cartridges are quite pricey.

The best on the market at the moment is the brother printers these are cheap to run and they also have no chips on the cartridges so there is very little that can go wrong with the cartridge. They produce good photos and are good all round machines.

Older HP printers are very good but the newer ones have very little in the cartridges some only have a half a teaspoon of ink in. HP have also stopped showing the ink volumes on the cartridges and now do it by page count but his is based on 5% coverage.

I only sell Canon and Brother due to the fact of the running costs and value for money. It really is dependant on what you print but my guide is that for mainly photo printing then canon. If it's just general printing but good quality photos as well then I would go with the Brother.

Oh and be careful of places like Tesco as they often have printers very cheap but these are the ones to watch out for as the cartridges will be ever so expensive!
Also avoid the dixons store group/currys as Lexmark printers from there are often made specifically for them and only they can sell the cartridges which they never have in stock!

Hope this helps!

If you really are prepared to spend more at the outset you might consider a laser printer. Toner costs a lot to buy, but it lasts a lot longer than an inkjet refill. Overall the running costs will usually be significantly lower than an inkjet, it will bw much more reliable and the print will be reasonably waterproof. You won't get photo quality from a laser printer.

If you need colour, then you're looking at upwards of £200 for an all in one.
