how to connect my laptop to my tv

Hi. I would like to connect my laptop to an old-fashioned (suddenly!) non-flatscreen TV. I heard there is a lead that will do this, but my TV shop says that it is only possible with new flat screen TVs. Does anyone know any different? I'm sure I remember several years ago having a lead for this purpose at school, to link my laptop to the school TV.

s video cable - if you have the right graphics card on your laptop.

I used to use this to connect my laptop to my huge boxy panasonic tv and it worked fine.

Ask a computer shop - a tv shop is bound to tell you you need a new tv

Ah, yes, good point!

No, just rang a computer shop and they say I need to have an s video port on my laptop, which is quite rare. And is round - I have checked and there are no round holes on my laptop.

What are you trying to do? I can watch videos on my TV from my laptop wirelessly, but only via our PS3. There maybe other workaround solutions depending on what other hardware you have and what you're trying to do (I wouldn't necessarily know what they are btw, but might help someone who does)

I want dd to be able to watch videos from You tube etc, because French dvds are pretty expensive and she loves watching them. Also we could watch things like BBC iplayer all together.

RacingSnake - I think you should be able to do this using a VGA to S-video converter.

Have a look at this site:

Thanks, will look at that! computer shop seems to be rubbish, sadly, as I have just had to spend £25 putting right my router that they had 'mended' so won't take their advice on non-possiblity of watching you tube on TV too seriously.
