Geeky stuff

I really fancy getting an Apple iTablet, I wonder how much it will cost in the UK

It looks so cute. I wonder if they will do slightly smaller version too, although it looks as though it would fit into a large-ish handbag with ease.

I'm not much of a cutting-edge person so I'll probably wait until it's been out 6 months or so. I find the second version of brand new technology is usually more useful than the first version. But still, I want it now.

I wonder what sort of book reading software it has, that will make a big difference to how many ebook titles will be available IMO.

want to get one for dh so would be interested to know what people think about them

I have an iPhone and have an app for Kindle on it, so I would imagine that the same app would work on the iPad. It looks like a big iPhone to me.

We have been thinking about getting a netbook but I think that the iPad might be a better option.

Anyone know about the 3G thing? I assume you will need a mobile phone contract?

MmeLindt · 28/01/2010 21:29

Article about books

bran · 28/01/2010 21:36

I have shown myself not to be a proper geek. It's an iPad not an iTablet.

I'm not sure about using it to read, it's quite big. I wonder if it would be a bit tiring on the wrist. I quite like my Sony eReader for it's size and display quality.

Like you MmeL I've been thinking about getting a netbook. I'm so reliant on the internet now that I feel like I've suddenly become illiterate if I'm somewhere without access to it.

Ok, researched a bit now.

It does not:

Do multitasking

Have a camera - which many netbooks for the same price do have - webcam for Skype would be good for me.

Have Flash - this is the killer for me. It is not an alternative for a netbook. There are ever more websites that use Flash, I notice it a lot when using my iPhone.

So, not for me. Shame.

bran · 28/01/2010 21:43

I bet the second generation of them will have some or all of those things MmeL. Look at how improved the iPod became in only a few generations. It would mean waiting at least another year or 18 months though. [impatient]

More than likely, Bran. I guess we will go for a netbook in the meantime. Shame, cause the idea is good. I think that they have rushed it out.

sausagerolemodel · 28/01/2010 21:45

i saw somewhere today that it would cost from £700 in the UK even though it retails from $499 in the US - BUT i cannot vouch for the website I read it on (and that's too much of a differential to make sense), so this may be unsubstantiated gossip. Don't quote me!

wonderingwondering · 28/01/2010 21:46

The Times said today that in $ they are priced at the equivalent of £350 for the one with WiFi to £500 for the 64GB.

I'm quite keen, am going to look at the e-book facility then decide. If you can link it up to the i-pod (the 164GB one) so you can store films on the i-pod but watch them on the tablet, we'll def get one.

wannaBe · 28/01/2010 21:55

I really can't see this making it big on the mass market tbh.

It's not small enough to be an ipod, it doesn't have a phone, if the 3g version is availablle over here (and there is some speculation that the wi-fi version only will be available here) then you will need a mobile phone contract and that won't come cheap. If only the wi-fi version is available then you wont have internet on the go, only where you have access to a wi-fi point.

Obv the apple geeks would buy it (they'd buy dog shite if apple marketed it, ) but I can't see much mass market appeal.

It's pretty much a bigger iPod Touch, so it has most of the same limitations.

It does multitask, you can play music from iTunes and surf the web. However Apple don't allow 3rd party applications to multitask, so you can't play music from Spotify and surf the web at the same time.

Apple is not a big believer in netbooks, they seem to see them as underpowered laptops. So Apple are going for something "new" here and aren't fussed about trying to do what a netbook can do.

As to getting that functionality later, I'd be surprised.

Apple lock out things like multitasking and flash for a number of reasons, including security, stability and control of the device. They've also locked them out right since the very start of the iPhone and haven't yet seen fit to change their minds.

If they allowed Flash then anyone could write an app for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad without having to go through the Apple approval process and the App Store.

So Apple loose the control, and depending on your point of view on what they're up to either loose the ability to make money or loose the ability to keep the platform nice, easy and reliable for people to use.

Personally I'm reasonably keen, an iPod Touch has radically changed how I use the internet. A lot of what i do is looking at maps, photos, quick wikipedia checks, train times or film times. The iPod is great for that, in the time it takes to boot up a laptop (even an Apple laptop which boots much quicker than a Windows one) I can be over and done with the Touch. A bigger version with speakers is rather tempting.

MmeLindt · 28/01/2010 22:18

I think the problem is that this is supposed to be an alternative to a netbook.

On a netbook I can have my Twitter app open at the same time as Firefox (and I can have Firefox), I can skype using the webcam, I can look at any website, even websites that use Flash. I have USB port so that I can connect to other stuff. As a second pc for home it does not do what I need it to do.

When I am out and about I have my iPhone so I can check emails/look up train times etc.

BadgersPaws · 28/01/2010 22:30

Well it's an "alternative" to a netbook in as much as Apple believes that netbooks are rubbish, indeed the whole idea of a netbook is seen by them as a non-starter, and that the iPad is what people really want.

The iPad doesn't want to be "a second PC for home" so as such it's clearly not for everyone.

What it wants to be is a bigger version of the iPod Touch or iPhone that a lot of people seem to quickly grab when they want to check something rather than actually have a home computing "experience".

I think there's a market for it, a lot of people I know, myself included, grab their iPhones/iPods for quick Facebook updates, email checks or web browses without having to go through the faff of booting a "proper" computer up.

Is there enough of a market?

I really don't know but we shall see.

MmeLindt · 28/01/2010 22:32

That is true. I can see that it will have it's uses.

I feel that it is going to be a slow starter and once the developers get their hands on it, it may well take off. Who could have foreseen how the whole App Store would develop?

BadgersPaws · 28/01/2010 22:42

Well in a way developers have already got their hands on it, it really is basically a big iPhone/iPod Touch. Developers have been aware for some time that they should consider the implications of a bigger screen.

So all of the stuff on the App Store should already run on it. Thousands of applications, games and utilities ready to run.

In a way Apple have spent the last few years seeding the market for this gadget, unlike a lot of it's rivals it can hit the ground running with a lot of support already out there for it.

It's going to be interesting to see if this thing takes off...

WebDude · 30/01/2010 01:41

By the time I am ready to splash a couple of thousand on Sonos systems for music around the house, I'll know if the Sonos control app makes the iPad more worthwhile than the iPod Touch. The Sonos remote is 280 quid, so a Touch is a cheaper option, but Sonos might have some tricks up their sleeve for the iPad, so I'll sit back and wait a year...

The lack of Flash is no big deal - I only have it installed on one PC (of several) and use an add-on for FF to block automatic playing, as I found too many ads were using Flash, and annoying me!

Tee2072 · 30/01/2010 07:29

I think the iPad may be Apple's first failure.

Its too big.

It can't multitask.

You still need a laptop as well.

And it has a name that will make over 50% of the world think of feminine hygiene products.

Yeah, well done Apple.

MrsJamin · 30/01/2010 07:32

I think we're going to get one as we only have a macbook pro at the moment to share between me and DH (and I'm sure 2YO DS will start using the computer soon too.) I think we'll be using it mostly for browsing the web. Hope it's not too pricey though!

said · 03/02/2010 15:53

I must admit, I don't understand the point of it but then I find the iPhone very resistible so I'm not the target market. But this made me laugh

WebDude · 03/03/2010 13:54
