xbox damaged disc

I am really fed up. Ds, just 12 finally saved up his birthday/christmas etc money and bought himself an xbox at the weekend. Tonight one of the new disc says it's unreadable, clean with soft cloth etc. We did this and still it doesn't work. It does seem to have a circular mark about half a cm from the edge of the disc so not a scratch exactly. He has played with it each day but we have been so careful with it. We got the box and game from Game. Does anyone know whether I would get any joy taking it back? I have no idea of my 'rights'. Thank you

No. This is common tho. The xbox was perhaps knocked or moved whilst playing. You are describing the ring of death!!

My son, or rather his young brother, has damaged his discs in this way before. Sorry it's not good news

Rombouts · 26/01/2010 19:58

is it only one of the discs though? Not the ring of death which is 3 red lights?

can he play different games ok?

GypsyMoth · 26/01/2010 20:06

Just the disc isn't it. Not the actual xbox?

Actually, our local 'blockbuster' can attempt to restore the disc, they have a machine they presumably clean up their discs with. They usually charge a pound and it may, or may not work. Sometimes needs to go through a couple of times. That's if it's the disc that's at fault.

Thanks for replying. He can still play his other disc so the box itself is ok. 'The ring of death' Oh dear. He's only had it 3 days! It certainly wasn't knocked over. How can something that costs so much be so easily broken? Why can't someone invent an alternative to the flipping cd/dvd?

What is the 3 red light ring of death? That sounds awful. Where do the lights appear?

I am thinking of getting dh to take the disc back to game? Will they laugh him out of the shop? thanks again. I do feel so sorry for ds but I am really cross!

Can you install a disc to the hard drive as soon as you buy it to prevent this kind of thing happening? I have no idea about these things. Be kind!

don't worry about the ring of death. microsoft replace your xbox if this happens. the green lights in the centre turn red and that is the xbox buggered.

They give you extra warranty for this problem.

You have deffo not got the ring of death. Take the disc back with the receipt.

Exactly the same happened to one of DS's games. I went back to Gamestation who looked at it and said that it is because the Xbox has been knocked. I said I knew that it had not fallen over and they said it is a very common problem and can be caused by something as simple as someone walking past the Xbox! so they could not replace the disk, the assistant did however clean it on their machine (he did say he couldn't guarantee it would work). We were lucky though, the disk has played fine since them. DS is now very, very careful not to go anywhere near the Xbox when using it. I must admit I was very that it was so sensitive - compared with his old PS2.

The Gamestation assistant gave me another useful piece of info - we had the Xbox standing up as we thought this was best for ventilation - standing it up blocks off a main air vent though so it is best to lie it flat IFSWIM!

That's interesting 2to. Walking past! God it makes you laugh. The game cost £45! Poor dh has just walked in and been told of our woes. Turns out he has a Game round the corner from where he works and he's going to try and take it back tomorrow. Even if he'd had it a month I'd feel better, but 3 days - it's a joke. I'll let you know how he gets on.

Hope he gets it sorted

Rombouts · 26/01/2010 20:54

why dont you say it has never worked? That way you can get your money back for sure. Once you say it worked well once but not now they will look for a reason to blame you/ds for damage.

Not strictly the truth but we are talking a £45 brand new game.

GypsyMoth · 26/01/2010 20:56

there was a consumer goods type programme on tv warning of this. think it was on early last year. so its common, and yes,was told same regarding position.

my ds prefers to hire his games,he often gets bored and wont spend £30-£40 of his pocket money on them....its better for him to hire at £1 a day as he only plays sporadically

Quick update. Dh took it in to Game. Girl looked at it and said it was definite laser damage. This had happened apparently because we had positioned the xbox in the vertical position. Dh said we had positioned it like this because every image of the xbox shows it like this (I actually set it up with ds following the instructions in the booklet to the letter). She said it should always be positioned horizontally and that the image of it vertically was only because it graphically it fitted the image better or something dh couldn't remember. Sounds ridiculous to me and utter nonsense. Anyway she said she couldn't exchange it but she offered to clean it. We have been lucky and it seems to work again. Dh said he would have taken it back if it hadn't with all the literature and demanded an exchange. He's quite disappointed that he doesn't have to. i just want one of her machines. My youngest son's Scooby doo dvd collection are completely trashed! What do you suppose they do to them?

Thanks again to everyone who answered.

thought so,very wrong of them isnt it!!

well the machine in local blockbuster does the same, they are supposed to charge a pound per disc, but never do. which is good of them

friendly · 27/01/2010 21:16

I think it's really bad.

Thank you for the tip about Blockbusters. I would happily pay for Scooby doo and the Loch Ness monster to be revived! Do they really offer that service to anyone or do you have to be a member? Dh was asked to come back after half an hour I don't know if that's because that's how long it takes or whether she had other things to do! Who knows.

I still cannot believe how sensitive the new member of our family is!

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 27/01/2010 21:21

it takes about 10-15 each disk. they advertisen the service so not sure if you need to be a member or not. you could ring and ask.

friendly · 27/01/2010 21:36

I definitely will. Thank you very much for your posts. Ds will be delighted. Bring back videos!
