Depends on the hifi and whether it has the micro phone jack/pluggy in thingymabob (sorry I don't know the technical term).

I can't on mine (ten year old Sony hifi) but my dad can on his, which is the same make, but the next model up from mine.

DH can on his TV.

Plus some newer ones take usb mics, like what you would use on the PS or Wii.

Do you need to know in a hurry? I will ask DH (sound engineeer) tomorrow.

From my very limited knowledge I think what you need is a karaoke machine. Microphones don't usually have the same connector as the hifi. Maybe you could do it on a computer?

oh thanks can wait till tomorrow. We dont have wii or ps. our tv is 14 years old . dd loves singing so i thought i can dowload the background track from websites, record it on cd and she can practise singing. Most of the karoake machine dont support the songs she wants to sing (foreign language) and i dont want to keep buying cds for karoake machine. sorry if i am vague but would appreciate any help

Hi I am Blythedance's DH.

What you need is a small audio mixer to connect into your HIFI, something like the product in the following link. this
You can plug a Microphone & a CD Player in to it and connect it into your HIFI on the AUX input (If it has one). It will enable you to turn up the volume of both the microphone and CD player at once rather than just switch between them.

This will work if you have a Separates HIFI system. If you have a midi type system you may need to use a separate CD or MP3 player and connect this in instead of the HIFIs own CD player using the appropriate lead.

Probably the best way of sorting it out is:
A: tell me the exact Make and Model number of your HiFI and I will tell you if this may work.
B: Buy a mixer like the one above online from someone like Soundslive
C: Take it to a "Maplin Electronics" store and ask them (They are normally helpful) for a cheap microphone for it and two leads one to connect your CD Player or MP3 to the mic and one to connect the mixer to the HIFI (The lead for this will probably be called an RCA Phono to 1/4 Inch Jack lead.

This is likely to cost you about £60 for the lot.

Hope this helps and you are not too confused - do ask if you have any more questions.

DH also says you can do it on a computer with the right software but usually hifi speakers are much better than computer speakers.
