Anyone know why my laptop battery won't charge up any more?

It is plugged in as usual, but when I remove the power cable it immediately tells me the battery power is 'critical'.

If I don't then plug it back in straightaway it hibernates.

Any ideas please?

i think its the battery comming to end of its life. rechargable batteries dont last forever , can you buy a replacement? .

As above, they don't last forever especially if you have a hibit of using the laptop while plugged in so to speak.

if you use laptop whilst plugged in, best to remove the battery and keep in a cool place - it lengthens battery life.

If you need to leave it in, you need to run down and charge regularly.

Well normally I use the laptop unplugged, but I can't now, it just gets stroppy and hibernates. I will investigate a new battery, I can't remember how long this one's been going for.

KewCumber, I've taken the battery out. It's not hot though. Maybe it fancies a change of scene?

no no battery not charging isn;t to do with it being hot. If you take the battery out and keep it in a cool place it lasts longer then only use it when you aren;t plugged into mains.

But if you mostly use it unplugged then thats no use - it may just have come to the end of its useful life (I reckom its about 2-3 years depending on use.)

tips to extend battery life

Another possibility is that the power relay board that takes a feed from the main power supply and charges the battery has died. This is quite common and in some models is a separate replaceable component.
A compute repair shop should be able to diagnose that before you shell out for a new battery.
