I keep clicking on the icon to the internet but it wont load the page. We rang the ISP twice yesterday (2nd call dd did from my mobile and cost 11 squid ) it wont temporarily and then stopped again.

Connections show it is connected.

Any clever Mnetters can talk me through sorting it please?

Connecting wirelessly to your router or modem does not mean that that router can in turn see the internet.

Can you connect with a network cable?

Does that make a difference?

Seems to be working ok ish at the moment but if anyone has any idea how to stop it happening again that would be appreciated!

SandC who is your ISP? I've had a problem getting online today, like you it says I am connected but won't let me get online. Iam with Postoffice broadband.

We are with Talk Talk/ Tiscali flier. It s such a pain - still messing about. The ISP says it's a problem with Dongal, but it isnt and we have spent about 3 hours being giving instructions that have worked once, then not at all

Some things to check are:
Is the wireless password correct. WindowsVista may report Limited Connection - which seems to mean the password hasn't been recognised correctly. Sometimes a reboot of the router is needed.
Wireless channel can cause issues. Seems that many DECT Phones use Channel 6... so avoid channel 6. As more and more people use Wireless systems, more channels will be in use in your local area... pick a channel, see what happens.

NetStumbler will detect WiFi networks in your local area and identify what channel they are on. Can be tricky to get it to detect your network adapter though - will work on some systems and not others. On my Acer Notebook it won't detect the adapter, though thinks I have two adapters. Worth a try, may help if it works on your system.

Also worth a try is inSSIDer another WiFi network scanner. This does work on my Acer Laptop (running Vista)

The ability to change channel will depend on your router's configuration options. I would have thought all would allow it, though routers supplied by ISP's may have limited config options.

Another issue that can occur is that the ADSL line plays up in some way. If your laptop connects to the router but not to the net, another thing to try is to remove the DSL cable from the phone socket. Leave it out for 15 minutes or so (have a coffee/tea, lunch or something) then plug it back in. That with luck will reset the line between you and the exchange.

If you have a dongle, then I am guessing that we are not talking about a WiFi connection - it's mobile phone (mobile broadband) connection.

In this case, I would call the operator support line.

I can think of 2 things off the top of my head - either your browser settings are wrong or your RAS/NDIS profile is wrong.

The browser settings would be something like, that it is looking for a proxy server that it can't find, eg because it's a proxy server from anther connection. In Internet Explorer, you find these under Extras | Internet options | Connections.

The RAS/NDIS profile you can find by bringing up the list of network connections from the Windows control panel. There will be settings for things like the security protocols allowed, and this may not be what your ISP is expecting.

The mobile operator support line should be able to fix these problems.

My mum has Tiscali/TalkTalk and has been having many connection issues over the past few weeks. She's in GU51 area, are you also that area?
