How do I record part of a song to use as a ringtone?

I've just inherited a phone that has a built in MP3 player so you can set one of your music files as the ringtone. The trouble is, it starts at the beginning of the song so you just get the introduction which is usually quite quiet and boring!!!

Is there a way of cropping a song somehow so I can have the chorus or a more interesting part of the song as the ringtone? If so, please explain (simply!!) how I do this.

The phone is a Sony Ericsson Cybershot C510.

Thanks!!

Your phone has both bluetooth and USB so you can transfer audio clips to/from it quite easily.

If you're using a Windows PC, you can download software called Total Recorder (from www.totalrecorder.com) standard edition, and then if you use (say) Windows Media Player to play the music track, while recording it with Total Recorder, you should be able to 'select' part of the track (a noisy bit!) and then save only that small part as a new MP3, and transfer it back into your phone.

You might have to experiment a bit with Total Recorder (if the demo version adds a tone, or stops recording after a short amount of time) but it is good software (handy for recording off streaming audio or if you plug a DAB radio into your PC to record shows permanently).

Good luck.

Thanks very much - I will check out that software!

You can also use Audacity,(which is free) to edit tracks & keep the bits you want.

iTunes can also produce extracts of music files, which can then be used as ringtones.

So if you already use that let me know and I'll run you through how to do it.

Yes Badgers, all the music is on iTunes. I'd be very grateful if you could explain the process! Thanks!!

OK....

  • Work out the start and the stop times you require (e.g. from 1:00 to 1:10).
  • Right click on a file in iTunes and select Get Info
  • Move to the options tab and enter a start and stop time.
  • Right click on the file and select "Convert to MP3/AAC/Lossless" or it might say "Create AAC/MP3/Lossless" Version. Exactly what it will say depends on your version of iTunes and your settings.
  • A new version of the file will be made cut to just the bit you entered.

Thanks very much BadgersPaws, I will try that this evening!
