I want one!

Unfortunately it's only coming out on vodafone and I'm with O2. Stupid Google.

Anyone else got their eye on one (and wants to make me )?

Oooh, just had a good look at that, and it looks great.

Currently have an iphone, and love that, but am a bit of a gadget geek, so always enjoy playing with something new.

My contract is up in March, will seriously consider waiting til this is out, to see whether I can afford one...

DH has his Palm Pre delivered today. It's lovely.

WebDude · 14/01/2010 14:00

MrsC - it is possible to get one that's not locked to Voda, but I thought I read that it's definitely not an exclusive arrangement (unlike the iPhone for a year or two being only available for O2), so expect to see the other networks consider it and come up with some tariffs sooner rather than later (ie no 12+ month waits)

TheresSnowDragonHere · 14/01/2010 14:06

I was under the impression that it would be available network free (IYSWIM).

sb6699 · 14/01/2010 14:20

No, no, no. Just got my HTC Hero a few weeks ago and thought I would be really cool for a while.

My younger db now says the google one will make it obsolete and within a few months I wont want to be seen outside with it!

MrsChemist · 15/01/2010 01:16

I think you can get it network free, but (in America at least) if you get it sim free there are issues connecting to 3G. Someone told me they were fixing it though. I'll wait if it means I can get it on O2.

V weak sales.. they've already discounted the upgrade ...

iiiiiiiphoooooone!

WebDude · 15/01/2010 19:45

The iPhone has a 30 month advantage, but that doesn't, in the long run, guarantee it will be outright "winner".

Unfortunately, some iPhone lovers don't seem willing to accept that other people sometimes choose other than Apple, as they aren't taken in by the hype!

WebDude · 15/01/2010 19:50

sb6699 don't worry about it - there's going to be a lot of upheaval in the mobile market, and it's the case that 'early adopters' usually pay through the nose, and get poorer versions than what comes out later.

Has always been the case with PCs, for example, where you could spend 1000 quid and 6 months later that same lump sum would get you a better screen, bigger disk drive, more RAM, faster CPU, all in a smaller, quieter box.

Point is, only an individual can decide when the price is low enough and the device 'good' enough for their needs.

I used to be one who bought early on, but now I see better and better devices at lower and lower prices, and that's why I'll save 50+% when I get a full HD Plasma TV, that will be 42" or bigger, when compared with what it would have cost 2 years ago, and now there's HD TV programmes as well as DVDs to watch, it finally makes sense to buy...

onebatmother · 15/01/2010 19:55

Thing is dude, in terms of outright winner, doesn't matter what you or I think. What matters is Apple's astonishing design/market consonance, the advocacy of their customer base etc etc.
And apps. Remember apps.

WebDude · 15/01/2010 20:21

There are only so many hours in the day (and night), so if there are 90,000 (and counting) apps, I will probably never have enough time to bother trying more than 1 %

I don't completely rule out the chance someday I may have an iPhone, I simply point to it not being essential (and 'cool' just doesn't cut it, for me). Sure Apple may have a good customer base, but they have also been lined up with Google and other big firms as having some pretty nasty policies.

FWIW, I have a 10 quid MP3 player that serves my needs. OK, it isn't an iPod but it can play MP3s, has voice recorder, FM radio, and can display JPG images as a slide show, too, so meets my needs at a price point I like. (Oh, and I didn't have any need for a 150 quid 'iPod dock and speakers', either!)

FrauKoch · 15/01/2010 21:33

ach, I completely agree with you wrt the anti-consumerist not-joining-in-with-the-hype bit dude.

But I do think Google are on a hiding to nada. Apple have the mix, they really do.

(onebat here)

CaptainNancy · 15/01/2010 22:43

There are plenty of apps in the google marketplace.

FrauKoch · 15/01/2010 23:09

Ye-es. But they get half the hype.
