I am amazing myself with my levels of ignorance when it comes to all things technical ...so I apologise in advance ...

I want to upload the photographs from my digital camera onto my netbook, but I can't load the software because there is no cd/dvd drive.

Is there a way around this? Can the software be downloaded from the internet at all?

Hellllp ...!!!

if your running anything from windows 2000 (or the equivelent) onwards as soon as you plug the camera - via the usb- into the pc it should recognise the device anyway.

then just upload the pics as normal

And it's much better and quicker than using the normally crappy camera software - IME.

Oh right, that's brilliant ...thanks!

Have you checked whether your netbook has an inbuilt card reader? A lot of them do. And if so whether it's compatible with your camera's card card? if so, that's usually the quickest way to move photos around.

Just wrote a long paragraph and then realised that I was saying exactly what Rusty just said. I think I need to go to bed...

How would I know if it has an in-built card reader?

PS thanks all - it worked

download Google Picassa, free photo management system, peasy to use, can edit photo's etc.

plus in camera and it all just does it.

"How would I know if it has an in-built card reader?"

See a photo of the card reader on the PC I'm using. 4 slots for different cards (CF, SD/MMC, MS Pro, and some other). Have seen some multi-card readers on Ebay claiming upwards of 40 types because the ones on this PC are not exhaustive...

However, while some Laptops might have them, I doubt many netbooks have them built in, as they add a bit to both cost and weight. I could be wrong, of course

A lot of cameras have a "bulk storage" mode, which make them look like a USB flash drive to the PC. If you set bulk storage mode, then plug it into the PC, it appears as an extra disk. You can then find the photos and copy them onto your PC.

They don't all have them webdude, but I've been looking at netbooks recently for the school I work at and a lot do nowadays - DH's Samsung only reads SD but the newest Asus Eee has Memory stick, MMC, SD & SDHC, the Acer Aspire one has MMC, MS, SD & xD and I've also seen them on the MSI Wind, Lenovo's Idea Pad and Toshiba and HP minis.

WebDude · 30/12/2009 10:39

Thanks for the info RB - happy to be corrected.

Think I would consider something taking SDHC but the machines which interest me most are those with HDMI output such as the EEE Box and MSI Wind, suitable for placing on the back of a flat screen display, and having a bigger HDD.

Nope, I've had a look and it doesn't have an in-built card reader.

I'll take a look at Picasso - thanks
