Chaps - finally downloaded the newest software for my iPod touch 16GB, and downloaded an app for my 3 yr old to use to help with her letters - Letter Peek - but I can't hear the voice. Why not? Have looked in settings - general - sounds - both speaker and headphones are ticked... What have I missed or what am I doing wrong? Thanks

Is the sound working through the headphones?

TheMoreItSnows · 18/12/2009 19:39

Sorry - been snowed under today (mainly with children due to the white stuff..) erm - yep works just fine through the headphones... Now what?!

I don't think ipods have built in speakers do they? you can only play stuff through headphones or plug in speakers I think.

TheMoreItSnows · 18/12/2009 19:43

Can anyone recommend a child friendly (3 yrs) app that definitely does have sound that works for them over the speaker - then I can check if this is a problem with this app or my iPod?

But when you have the 'keyboard clicks on' you can hear the clicks wether you have the headphones plugged in - am I being really dim I am a bit of a technophobe....

if you search for pre-school in the app store, there are a few: pre-school music is good. Also pre-school adventure and pre-school arcade has a letters game.

Thanks for that BahHumbug - I'm beginning to think that it might be the simple fact that apps are aimed more at iPhones rather than 'classic' iPod touches! I'll try one of those you recommend and see what happens.

Have consulted ds1 who is the fount of all iPod touch knowledge in this house.

He wants to know- is it a 1st or 2nd generation touch? Cos apparent;y only 2nd gen can be heard without speakers/headphones.

Also (and sorry if this is patronising or anything - I am a technophobe and only passing on what he's said) have you turned up the volume control on the side?

BadgersPaws · 19/12/2009 00:51

There's been three generations of the iPod Touch and only the most recent two have a "proper" external speaker.

With the first generation, which doesn't have a tapered back and lacks volume buttons you have a small speaker that can make clicks but won't do any other sound.

Does you iPod have proper physical volume buttons on the side? If not then you have to listen through headphones.

WebDude · 19/12/2009 11:25

If it is the case that it's a first generation model, then it might be worth getting some amplified speakers (assuming the units have a standard 3.5mm socket on them), to make life easier than fiddling with the headphones.

WebDude · 19/12/2009 11:27

(was thinking of the small amps aimed at MP3 player users, IYSWIM, with a 3.5mm plug on the end of a length of stereo cable to the amp/speakers)

Oooh just logged on and didn't expect further assistance - so am delighted - I shall investigate all those suggestions tomorrow at my leisure (hence avoiding looking like a fool in front of DH!)Don't think we have volume controls on it - but as a technophobe I am delighted that the assistance has been at my (basic) level. Thank you all so much for your help...(Off to find out how to sneak an iPhone into the house without DH noticing the difference...)
