I keep getting this message on firefox and it won't do anything with java - which is most things, including lots of MN (can post just about, but can't see the buttons or any pics like smilies) and I can't send any emails in hotmail because that is java too.

It was happening a few days ago and I put it down to my hard drive being full, but have deleted a load of stuff and now have 6GB free (20GB hard drive so more than a quarter) and it worked fine, but it has just started doing it again

I know my laptop is old and rubbish (only 512 MB RAM) but surely it ought to be able to cope with browsing the internet? I have checked the virtual memory paging thing and it's set at 744MB. I haven't got loads of things running at the same time - only virus protection and a music player. It has been fine for months and months, why is it suddenly having a problem?

Hi BertieBotts

Two things to suggest.

1 is to defragment the hard disk
2 is to download and install Ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and use it to clean out all the temporary files. You can also use it to repair the registry.

Hope this helps

Not sure what OS you have, BB, but if you can start the Windows Task Manager (on XP you can use CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) and then look at the list of processes, you will see the different programmes running, how much CPU time they are using and how much RAM is in use.

If you click on one of the headings (image name, CPU, mem usage) it sorts the output.

I have been using Firefox for quite a time, and now and then (when I have 30-50 tabs open, spread across different windows), it starts to 'grow' larger and larger once it has hit about 250 MB (shown as 250,000). I have noticed that it also loses the UK keyboard layout (so quote marks and the @ symbol swap places).

Normally I use the task manager to "crash" Firefox and then start it again shortly after - it should remember every page you have had open and even the text you are typing into a web form.

No virus, possibly just a 'bug' (poor memory management) but generally nothing to worry about, just a minor pain. I've kept some of the same websites in different tabs for weeks on end, now and again just 'crashing' FF if it seems to be getting slow.

Oh, and I generally get a 'script running too slow' message (from Google Mail tab). Not quite the same, as I'm asked if I want to keep the script running or not.
