Looking to buy a wireless router so my daughter can access the internet in her bedroom on her computer. Can anyone recommed a good one to buy? I haven't got a clue and don't fancy walking into PC World or Currys without knowing a bit of what I am talking about

If you know that you need a cable one (rather than ADSL) then you know everything you need to!

Good brands
Netgear
Lynksys
Buffalo

Not so good
Belkin
D-Link

Finally, don't walk in to PC World or Currys - better deals on the internet, even from PC World's own on-line shop (book it on the web then walk in to the shop, pick it up and pay) like this one.

That is at the cheaper end, which is all you need unless you plan to stream movies all over the house.

Does she really need wireless? If she just needs access in her bedroom then a homeplug network is likely to be more reliable and more secure.

You will still need a router with a homeplug network so it is going to be more expensive, less flexible and no more reliable or less secure than a wireless LAN (make sure you read the manual and set up WPA security).

Thanks for responding MrAnchovy.

Cruel.... never heard of a homeplug network - will have a look on the internet to find out more.

I have to disagree about security. A wireless network is visible to anyone in the vicinity with a wireless card and decent software, although this can be mitigated by not broadcasting your ssid.

A homeplug network is only visible to people with some specialised kit or plugged into your power supply, so it is definitely more secure.

It's also more reliable because it's not vulnerable to interference from other wireless networks and devices using the same radio frequencies.

It might need a separate router if your modem doesn't already do NAT. What do you have as a modem?

Sorry, combination of PC World and Mumsnet ad tracking breaks my link.

Google netgear wgr614 pcworld to find a £32 router that will do the job.

I'm not going to get into an argument here about wireless network security.
