Dh is in the US and I need a new laptop. I quite fancy a Macbook, all I know is that I shouldn't get an Air, so which model do I get?

It will be used for surfing, photos, music and home admin.

Will it be significantly cheaper in US Duty Free than say shopping around for it in the UK?

I am not currently in the UK so I can't get to an apple store to try them out, so your opinions would be very helpful.

I have a MacBook Pro and I love it. What's wrong with the Air? Have they had a bad write up?

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/05/2009 19:46

I think they don't come with a DVD player/writer if I understand correctly...

Are there loads of Macbook Pros, ie different specs etc?

Well I can tell you about mine

Processor 2.2GHz
Memory 2 GB

Lie I said I love it, I use it for photos, making DVDs, surfing the web, watching tv on the web and personal admin - pretty much what you have want it for. I would recommend buying a Time Capsule too for backing up all your files. Once it's set up the Time Machine programme does it all for you in the background.

Ok so I am looking at the Apple website and basically my choice is between a regular 13inch Macbook and a 15 inch Macbook Pro like yours. Does yours have an inbuilt webcam too? And I'm presuming you have a special slot for putting a memory card into? (I'm not too techie minded, can you tell? )

Yes I have a camera.......not sure about the memory card slot. I am also not techhie minded There are some slots, regular USB, headphone jack, and a few others

Thanks It's good to know I'm not alone...

Now I'm just not sure what are the advantages of having a Macbook Pro rather than a plain old Macbook.

Ummmmmmm..............don't know DH bought it for me. I can ask him why he chose it over a Mac when he calls if you like. When do you need to let your DH know by?

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 18/05/2009 20:38

MacBook Pro is for serious video, music and video editing, so would be wasted if you just want to do standard surfing and office stuff. You pay a lot more for the Pro so if you don't need a professional machine it's not really worth it.

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 18/05/2009 20:39

I meant video, music and image editing of course

VinegarTits · 18/05/2009 20:40

I have a macbook air, i love and it looks so sexy and is very light and mobile

You have to buy the cd drive seperate, but its about the size of a cd case so fits nicely into my laptop bag and only comes out when i need to burn an idvd

fruitshootsandheaves · 18/05/2009 20:45

I have a macbook pro too but mine is full of graphic software like photoshop. It does get quite hot, I have a stand with a fan in for mine. I imagine the air gets hotter as its thinner and theres less room for a fan.

DrZeus · 18/05/2009 20:50

I've got a 13" macbook in white and it's fab. I use it for mumsne (obviously!), surfing, email, documents - IWORK is good and I've just started using iPhoto and Garageworks.

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/05/2009 20:52

So, the upshot is, if I am just MNing, editing photos (in a very basic way of course)organising my music, possibly downloading a movie or two, potentially 'editing' a rather bad home movie and writing documents, the Macbook or Air will suffice? God it's complicated....

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 18/05/2009 20:55

Yep, that's it. I've had Macs for years and do what you've described plus editing home movies etc, downloading music etc and the MacBook does me fine. In fact, DH actually edits audio for work on his and again, the MacBook is fine for him.

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/05/2009 21:01

Fabulous, thank you all, the Macbook it is.

Now will it be cheaper in the US do you think? Also I suppose as dh transits through Heathrow he will have to get a UK power cable too..
