Intel Core temperature warning.

Eep. I just had a few warnings pop up that the intel core temp was >10C

I run some distributed software that can be intensive so I've switched it off and the warnings stopped.

I intend to give my pc a good dusting later in case its a clogged fan or something.

How worried should I be and where can I find out what my core temps are (machine is a quad core processor)

thanks!

Cleaning fans is a good start.

I use Everest software to display temps, but I think you have to pay for that now so wait for a better suggestion. There are lots of different ones that do the job, but I'm a bit out of date.

Are you sure it said >10C ? mine isn't intel or quad core, but it is currently 56C so that doesn't sound scarily high.

If you go into the bios you should see temps and fan speeds there. Getting into the bios setup varies, but generally starting up while tapping the DEL key or sometimes F1,F2 etc does it. If you watch the startup screen some say on there "press so and so key to enter setup"

If you get into the bios it will probably be under 'PC Health'

I'm pretty sure it said >10C. It had me as it would be a rare day indeed that ambient temp got to that level!

I gave it a good clean. The fans were pretty filthy.

I'll just check in the bios......

Ok I've got
Processor thermal (? I wrote it short hand and already forgot exact words!) 34C
Motherboard 52C
ICH 74C
MCH 71C

dunno what it means!?

MCH is the Northbridge (Memory Controller Hub)
ICH is the Southbridge (I/O Controller Hub)
Both are parts of the motherboard which do get pretty hot.

I'm told that up to about 90c is ok for those, but they probably go higher than they are now when you are doing things.

If you got a warning from Windows it must have a program running that keeps an eye on it. Take a look in the system tray (bottom right bit of the taskbar) for something which will probably have Intel in the name. It might open up to display all the temps and fan speeds (in case one fan has failed) It might even have a help file.

Btw 'Processor thermal' could be right, but could it have been 'Processor threshhold' because they sometimes have a setting which can be used to shut the computer down for safety. It's not always turned on so maybe the >10c Means 10C over the limit?

Thanks Onager I suspect its the Climate prediction program I have running through BOINC causing the issue.

I'll have a better look tomorrow.
