Hi wonder if anyone could tell me the average cost for someone to build a website..

I have been quoted £350 + Vat, which includes a years hosting. That is for a 5 page site, fairly basic I think but with some pictures etc.

Hi I have a basic website, the first one I paid someone £500+vat to build, but after a while I felt I needed complete control over updating the content etc.

So I've gone with 1&1 for their basic business package about £8 a month, I am a complete technophobe and managed to make my own website over a few evenings.

I don't want to put a link here as its my rl name as my domain but you can email me on legoates @ aol . com and I can send you a link off mumsnet - its not fab but its basic and people say its better than the one I paid to have done at the start.

Quite a few people who are more techy than me have gone 'oh not 1&1' but for beginners I think its fab. And cheap.

If however you want one built, you need to ask the builder about alterations - I found that I am continally wanting to make changes to mine not cos I'm fussy but because my business evolved in a slightly different direction. Some quoted cheaper to build the website but wanted ££ for each change, the one I paid asked a bit more for the website but did small changes inc in the main price.

Oh the 1&1 includes the hosting.

Thanks FJ, I will E-mail you. The company is Thomson Local, we are advertising with them and they have branched out into web design... I can only make changes every six months but after a year we can move to smeone else for hosting, we would keep web address & the site itself apparently. I will have a look at your site and then at 1&1, £8 pe month sounds very reasonable. Thanks.

Changes only every 6 months is not much - I find I want to re-word mine every time I look at it!

Watch out they will probably then try to sell you search engine optimisation too - I've just put a post on here to see if anyone can help me do it for myself.

Have sent you the link.

these people are really good

www.newgenerationwebsites.co.uk

they did one for me really cheaply a couple of years ago

wasabipeanut · 29/04/2009 16:41

I paid £200 for mine but I already paid for the hosting and it was a former colleague that did it - sort of mates rates.

Having said that I think fees are on the way down.

I use Wordpress which is open source blogging software but my guy built a professional looking site on it - you could never tell it was a blog. The good thing is I can add stuff going forward like new clients, reference quotes etc. If you use Bluehost for hosting they have all the Wordpress compatible scripts so its ultra easy to set up.

Avoid 123 hosting. They are cheap but they suck.

Lauriefairycakes, that woman really put me off looking any further than their home page!

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 29/04/2009 16:42

yeah, they do video websites too

very cool

Hi Wasabi I am interested about your wordpress site, would it be possible to post your url so that I can check it out? I am considering building my new site using wordpress and it's always good to know what can be achieved using it.
