Downloaded Adobe Reader a couple of weeks ago which seemed to work but am getting a Runtime error terminating the program (or IE) when I open a pdf file. any ideas how to correct this please ?

I can only suggest uninstalling Adobe Reader and reinstalling it. Making sure you have no other windows (especially IE) open at the time as that can interfere.

To uninstall go to Control Panel - Add/Remove programs.

If you can post the exact error message that might narrow it down. Also you can find out what your PC did recently by looking in Events. It may show the error in more detail there. Probably next to a red icon.

One way to get to events is Start Menu, Click Run box. Type in eventvwr.msc. Then look in the system or applications section.

If it had been more recent you could have used the windows restore option, but doing it now might undo other things and make matters worse.

Btw there is an option in Adoble reader to tell it NOT to open a pdf file in IE, but to always open it's own window. I find this better anyway.

Message reads :-

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error !

Program C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\explore.exe

This program has requested Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

It turns out that there are 100s of causes for that error so I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling adobe and see if that does it.

Btw you don't use "Free Download Manager" do you?

LIZS · 16/04/2009 19:48

thanks will have to try that . Free Download Manager, not as far as I'm aware - how would I know ?

removed Adobe Reader 9.1 but now it won't reinstall - came up with the runtime error as it was downloading.

I've had the same problem if you want a bit of solidarity but feck all useful advice.

If you go to this download page you can use the dropdown box to select the operating system you are using. If you using Vista for example it might make a big difference.

Also I would untick 'install google toolbar' as that just complicates things.

One other thing is that when it puts the gold bar at the top of the browser and says 'click here to install' you can ignore that and look lower down to the bit that says

"Thank you. Your download will start automatically.
If it does not start, click here to download"

If you click on that it will let you download it to your computer FIRST and then you can run it to install it. Things that download and install in one go are more prone to go wrong.

Btw the 'Free Download Manager' was the cause of lots of similar problems, but might have nothing to do with this. There is a legitimate program called that and a lot of fakes that might contain viruses and so on. What happens is people see a popup that says "Free Download Manager - Click now to speed up your downloads" and they click to install it and things start going wrong. You will only have it if you installed it on purpose and then it would be in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Sorry to be thick do you mean I should "save" rather than "run" from the download window. Where should it save to and how would I then run it to install ?

OP posts:
onagar · 23/04/2009 23:37

well it may not even help, but if you choose SAVE then pick say My Documents and let it save there then when it has completed the download it will offer to run it anyway.

Also that means if you try again later after changing something you can go to where it downloaded and double click it to run it and not have to download it once more.

Actually maybe you'd be better off installing the slightly earlier version.

If you go the the page here and select your computers operating system. Vista/XP etc. Then click Continue and scroll down a bit you can tick to install Adobe Reader 8.1.3 which might work better.

LIZS · 24/04/2009 17:08

Thank you . Have downloaded the older version and so far so good. How do you set it to open in another window btw ?

I have found comments elsewhere that some versions are causing problems so that sounds promising. I expect the next new version that comes out will be ok.

Assuming the menu's are the same you need to run adobe reader itself (it will be on the start menu somewhere) and go to the Edit menu and click Preferences.

This will bring up a dialog box with lots of options down the left. You want the Internet one. When you select that you will see on the right hand side Display PDF in Browser. Untick that and it should open in a proper Adobe window in future which gives you more options anyway so is better.

LIZS · 24/04/2009 17:46

thanks , have done that so we'll see what happens.
