Desperate for a clue re my landline phone conection - can call out but not receiving

I have a BT Verve 450 and BT Broadband. For months I have not been receiving calls but I can call out. When I ring my landline from my mobile it sounds like its ringing but the landline is not making any noise (ifyswim). People have been telling me that I'm never there and I don't have an answering machine but I am and I do.
I phoned BT and we have checked the main line in and established its not faulty, they have sent me a new Verve 450 which I have plugged in but the exact same thing is happening.

HELP please anyone? What could it be? It's probably something really stupid. My broadband is via a BT Wireless Hub if that makes any difference. I have justs noticed a green phone socket at the back of the Hub - am I supposed to use that?

sorry if long and boring but it's really annoying me now and can't afford to have a bt engineer come out.

TIA

Sorry didn't mean to be rude!!
I have to dash out as I have just trod on the cat's paw and crushed his claw into the pad. It's bleeding and he's not putting weight on it.
have just rung vet and we have to go now.

Really really appreciate your help and will be back again later.

Thanks again!

oh no! poor you...hope cat is ok

wasn't thinking you were rude. Were worried you were picking up your verve 450 and smashing it into the wall

hope it all gets sorted

Hello I'm baaaack! I got caught up in rl stuff.
Cat is fine - phew !

Right this phone business - I am sorely tempted to chuck it against a wall.
I have now tried it in all the different sockets and in the outside line (it actually works there) but no luck.

I am going to have to get them to send an engineer out but I shall moan about being charged because I rent the line and the phone. They've got a cheek. I've a good mind to charge them compensation for it only serving half its function i.e calling out and not receiving calls. GRRR

Thanks again for all your help.

I'm a bit muddled what's been tried so will just start from scratch.

In every phone socket that's in use you have a filter which looks something like this

The clear plastic bit goes into the phone socket on the wall. The phone plugs into the filter in one of the holes.

The Hub also plugs into a filter in whatever room it is in. If it's in the same room as the phone they both plug into the same filter.

You don't want to plug the phone into the hub unless it's a special phone for that purpose. You can't plug a phone straight into the phone wall socket either. It has to go into a filter that is plugged into the phone wall socket
