Stephen Fry talking about his love of technology, Twitter etc here

In this article he says "... It's that awful British snobbery. ... if someone's email address is hotmail or AOL, you kind of think "Hmmn, I see, they're not a real player, are they?" "

Can anyone explain to me why you are not a "player" if you have hotmail or yahoo? [slightly wounded emoticon] and [not really bothered about being a "player" emoticon]

Awful British Fry snobbery, I think. Wouldn't have occured to me. Haven't a clue what it means.

OrmIrian · 12/03/2009 19:46

?

Nope don't understand.

Babbity · 12/03/2009 19:53

Well AOL is a bit odd really and no self respecting computer nerd would touch it with a bargepole. Hotmail - because there are far better web based email providers out there (gmail is infinitely superior in every way for example). Hotmail is also MSN and therefore deeply untrendy (because thesendays MSN is uninnovative compared to Apple and Google).

BocciBalls · 12/03/2009 19:57

Fry does also use the example of "thank god for Sainsburys because it keeps the scum out of Waitrose" in this article...

Thanks Babbity that is probably what Fry is getting at. Now feel deeply inadequate [not really] about my hotmail address but am absolutely never going to be arsed to change as I've had it forever.

I sort of understand what it means, and I also think he's admitting that this snobbery isn't totally reasonable.

I have a different view of webmail addresses though. I use both my "real" ISP email address and a yahoo account quite a lot, but would prefer spammers to spam me at yahoo than my ISP account, so am more likely to give that one for certain purposes. I think a lot of people use webmail addresses that way.

pmsl@ e-mail addy snobbery.

I have to confess to a bit of fry-esque techno-snobbery though I do agree it's not good.

I prefer email addresses where the person's actual name appears and tbh I prefer it if someone I'm going to meet or work with has a website or web presence so I can check them out and get a handle on them. then I judgey mcjudge them if their website is crappily designed - yes I do Snobbery points go to people who have their own domain name too.

The worst of all is women who not only don't have their own domain name, not only don't have a website or web page, but use their husband's email address. i know it has been done before on here but I really do think tsk! Sorry.

OFGS, a new frountier of silly shite.

Forgive me if I don't rush out to change my hotmail address - but I find it really useful to filter out all the boring gits, losers, people I wouldn't want to know anyway!

KingCanuteIAm · 16/03/2009 00:31

See, I am so techno know nothing I can't even get my scores to work. The good thing though - I don't care
