Got a new lap top today and tried to connect but it needs a password. Is there anyway I can connect to this particular network without having to contact the network provider? (Am unable to contact them). I have access via my Desktop. Is there anyway I can find out what the password is on my desktop? Thanks!

is it not on the back of your hub??

harleyd · 26/02/2009 13:44

is should be called wireless key number or something

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2009 13:47

So you are connecting through a wireless router?
What sort of router is it? You'll need the wep key (or the other sort of key that I can't remember)

I connected mine up day before yesterday. Have got a belkin router. I had to go to the router software and switch on broadcast ssid. Then when I clicked on my netbooks wireless connection thingy it could see it. I had to type in the routers wep key and that did the trick.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2009 13:48

if its a belkin I can talk you through it properly

DrNortherner · 26/02/2009 13:49

If it's your wireless network then surely you set the password?

castlesintheair · 26/02/2009 13:55

No I didn't set the password (I don't think ) I think it was set through DH's company. It asks for a security key or pass-phrase. It's not looking good is it? Thanks for the advice so far.

Then someone at dh's company should know it. It's just to prevent freeloaders hopping on it.

castlesintheair · 26/02/2009 14:13

I can't contact DH's company.

OYBBK, how do I find the WEP key? Is it on the router?

so you dont have a hub?
sorry im no use then

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2009 14:47

For belkin I put 192.168.2.1 into my browsers address bar. That takes me up to the set up page. It is then under the security settings. It'll either be a wep key or a wpa key depending on how its set up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2009 14:48

Just to make it clear - you do that on the pc that you have already working and connected up!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2009 14:49

Would help if you can let us know what brand your router is!

castlesintheair · 26/02/2009 14:51

Oh yes, sorry, it's a D-Link router.

they mac have limited it to certain mac addresses - you need to connect to the router web site (mine is 198.162.0.1 I think) and see if you can work out how it is set up.

this might help

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/02/2009 15:02

Sounds like its done similarly to the belkin then - just shove 198.162.0.1 where you'd normally put in a website address and see if that takes you to your router set up. Then there will be the security setting there somewhere.

castlesintheair · 26/02/2009 19:51

Thanks for the advice. I tried everything but it didn't work. I now seem to be connected to Telewest Belkin 4SR. I didn't have to enter any passwords or even sign up for anything. Not very techy (can't you guess) so just wondering if anyone knows anything about it? Thanks again.

lol! It sounds like you are piggy backing on someones unsecured network for free!

castlesintheair · 26/02/2009 22:24

Oh really I honestly have no idea how these things work . I asked DH when he got in from work and he didn't know either! I've since lost that connection ...

Well, the upside is, you know now how to get onto free wi-fi hotspots
