Help me into the 21st Century- downloading tunes?!

Hi

I have stupidly bought an IPod Shuffle having been told by the sales assistant that it was dead easy, just charge up, plug into computer and download tunes.

Well, firstly, my USB port on my laptop is not fast enough for the IPod, so any tunes I download will sound like they're on the wrong RPM.

I then tried a PC at work, got onto ITunes but I couldn't download the installer as there was a password protect on the system to stop random things being downloaded onto the PC.

When on Itunes I couldn't work out how the hell I was supposed to download anything anyway.

Tonight I'm going to my parents' house where they have broadband and a newer PC to try there, but how on earth do you go about getting tracks onto the shuffle? Unless I've missed something, the I tunes website does not have a simple- pick your tune and download it icon. I assume I'm being a complete simpleton. Can anyone help me?!

I have a Mac so the buttons on itunes might be a little different but it will be something similar.

On itunes, there is a sync button or you can click file, then 'sync ipod' after you have plugged in your ipod and it will upload the music onto the ipod. It will upload every tunes that has a tick next to it. Any tunes you don't want, just uncheck them.

You can set itunes to automatically sync when it detects your ipod has been plugged in. Click preferences (or options, it will be in one of the menus along the top of itunes), then click devices, and then untick 'automatic synching for ipods/iphones'. This is handy for when you have added new music and want to update the ipod with the new stuff.

I take it you got a firewire cable?

Good luck!

Oh, I just realised - you don't have tracks on itunes do you?

You either need to add tracks from your cd collection onto itunes or you can buy and download from the 'itunes store' which is on the left hand side.

If you insert a cd into a pc with itunes installed, it should open itunes and from there you can click to 'import' or 'add to itunes' the cd.

Your usb port should be fine for the shuffle, it is more likely the cable that is the problem. I had to get a 'firewire' cable when I got my ipod.

I don't know if I understood 'exactly' what you were asking so sorry if I've over-explained or explained something you already know?

Good luck!

Thank you, I know nothing. I think there is a problem with my Ipod shuffle as it won't play through the headphones but will play through the computer.

ITunes was a NIGHTMARE of horrendous proportions. to cut a long story shot, I was totally unable to download a thing. first i had to download Itunes- fine. Then pressed run, and it said I had to download Quicktime. Did that after spending ages trying to find one that was free. Went back to Itunes and all I could see was 'adverts' telling me what ITunes could do for me, but I was unable to access any music to buy. Thats all I wanted to do, find music, buy it, download it onto my Ipod and listen to the damn stuff. guessing, I clicked on Itunes Store, but it wouldn't open.

After an hour, I gave up and went to Napster. After downloading that and signing up to a free trial (which I didn't want to do, I just wanted to BUY MUSIC!!!!!) I managed to buy and download a Chemical Brothers track. The computer said that that track was now on the Ipod and also 7 other tracks I'd imported, downloaded, whatever you want to call it, from my DH's netbook. The tracks may be on there, but I can't get the Ipod to do a damn thing. I switch it on, press play and nothing. I skip tracks, nothing, turn the sound up, nothing.

I thought it was meant to be easy. I'm not a complete techno idiot (I manage to use a chatroom site FFS), yet it seemed you need a bloody degree in order to use these things.

I am going to take the Ipod back to Currys, and get them to play whats on it, and if for some ridiculous reason, there is actually nothing stored in the Ipod, although my computer says there is, I will ask them to download a fecking tune and show me that the bastard thing works.

there, I am calm now....

So if anyone can explain to me what I've done wrong, please do and don't worry about over explaining or patronising me as clearly I need all the help I can get.

There should be plenty of info on the Itunes web site. HAve a good read through that before going back to Currys.

www.apple.com/itunes/tutorials/

I'm a little unsure about finding a free version of Quicktime as it is a free download.

when you attach the shuffle. At the top of the itunes window should be a progress bar saying syncronise. When that is complete you can then discconect the shuffle from the PC

thank you. the tutorials wouldn't load either. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The ipod might be faulty. OH had a shuffle that worked the first time it was used and then never worked again so he had to take it back and get a replacement.

HolyGuacamole · 19/02/2009 18:55

Here's something that might be helpful

Forrester · 20/02/2009 11:03

Thanks holy, I'll give it ago.

Mrspnut- I think you may be right.
