I got it yesterday and I am so in love!

So I was wondering, how quickly do you get used to the touchscreen qwerty keyboard? My typing is shockingly slow at the moment! Can you use a stylus instead of stubby fingers?

What are the best applications? So far I have facebook, ebay, twitter, su doku, whiteboard, last.fm and urbanspoon!

The only think that's annoyed me so far is there's no link between the contacts and calendar. You can put in your friends' birthdays into contacts but they don't automatically come up in your calendar.

Oh and it seems that iTunes is just as rubbish as it was years ago when I got my ipod.

OOh I am waiting for my contract to renew so I can get one.

CoteDAzur · 15/02/2009 20:55

It's the best gadget in the world.

Enjoy

CuriousSquid · 15/02/2009 20:55

DH has one - he got used to it quickly and is never off te bastard thing now

hotCheeseBURNS · 15/02/2009 21:38

Dp got himself an xbox yesterday. I don't think we'll be speaking to each other much for a while! I have been texting him though because texting on the iphone is cool

enjoy - I love mine - especially being able to link maps to contacts. Also, I don't have satnav but the iPhone is just as good, even gives you current location. Only annoying thing is not being able to forward texts.

hotCheeseBURNS · 15/02/2009 22:12

I'm looking for a case for it now. Don't know what type to get. I quite fancy a posh leather one but they're so expensive on the apple website. Lots of cheap silicone ones on ebay but I don't like the look of them...

I love mine! I have mostly books (inc complete works of Jane Austen) and card/puzzle games on mine - my favourite game is Textropolis.

I'm getting used to the keyboard now (I've had it since Christmas) It learns your preferences in spelling from what you type and from things in your contacts etc (eg it's stopped trying to correct 'DH' when I'm posting on MN, though it did mean when I was writing about my amber necklace it kept correcting it to Amber, which is DD's name)Apparently it can also work out which letter you're likely to type next and it increases the surface area for that letter to give you less chance of mistyping. A normal stylus doesn't work because of the way the conductivity receptors are set up, but I've heard someone's working on one with a special tip I wouldn't want to use one though, I like the way you just slide a finger across - it's much more intuitive.

"Apparently it can also work out which letter you're likely to type next and it increases the surface area for that letter to give you less chance of mistyping"

I thought it was doing something clever like that! I know what you mean about using fingers being intuitive, it's just tricky when the "buttons" are small.

Found lots of gorgeous cases on Etsy, just trying to work out which to buy!

Oh, and I love the Koi Pond - even though it's totally pointless - and it now has rain!

weebump · 15/02/2009 22:44

Ah, I'm so envious. I'm also waiting till my contract is up, and hopefully by then there'll be a new super-duper version iPhone out.

hotCheeseBURNS · 15/02/2009 22:45

Oooh that sounds nice. Is it free? Can't believe tetris is £2.99! I know I'll be buying it anyway though!

There it is - 59p. Fairly reasonable

I have an iphone I love it so much.

Some good apps that are free are: jellycar - a silly game with cars made of jelly, zombie attack free - a silly zombie game, lightsaber - makes a star wars light sabre with sound affects as you swoosh it around (is obviously only for very childish people, I love it)

ooh and get shazam - its so good it listens to music (say if you're listening to the radio) and then tells you what the song is and lets you go buy it!

RustyBear · 15/02/2009 22:59

I've got Shazam - but it's obviously not meant for my kind of music - doesn't recognise 70's/80's folk, or the Torchwood & Dr Who soundtracks! It is good when it does recognise a tune though - you can say -oooh I like that, what is it & be downloading it in a couple of minutes!

retiredgoth2 · 15/02/2009 23:04

....it does correct many common errors on the qwerty keyboard.

However, the programmers plainly went to convent schools. I often find words I have entered changed...

....so my texts have muck talk of ducks, duckers and ducking, for example.

Ahem.

hotCheeseBURNS · 15/02/2009 23:15

Haha all phones do that don't they? Even when you add your chosen profanities into their dictionaries they "forget" after a while!

Does anyone else have any tips or app recommendations?

I'm too extremely jealous to join this thread!

MmeLindt · 21/02/2009 21:48

I have WunderRadio so that I can listen to UK radio here in Switzerland

And WeatherPro so that I can indulge in the typical British obsession with the weather.

iSteam is fab, it really impresses folk and is good to keep the kids occupied in cafes

TVguide as I cannot buy Radio Times and it is easier than looking up the computer to see what is on.

And the fantastic MailTranslator so that I can email in French.

Just downloaded Shazam yesterday after hearing about it on MN. It is great.

The only thing missing is being able to send MMS with photos.

hotCheeseBURNS · 22/02/2009 16:46

Thanks MmeLindt! Have downloaded wunder radio, weather pro and isteam already!

I love mine.

I have some great apps as well. Remember the milk, (shopping list thingy) bejwelled a game which is addictive and a mind map thing called blue sky for looking ridiculously creative in meetings. I have some note taking thing as well and have been told to get some google thing but havent got round to it yet.

I love the fact that it will shuffle playlists and writing becomes easier once you realise it makes choices for you. It is annoying you cant do it wearing gloves though (as I found out freezing in the last cold snap).

Otherwise it is a thing of beauty and wonder and look good sitting next to my lovely MAC.

hotCheeseBURNS · 25/02/2009 19:32

Oh my god I've just discovered that I can use the BBC iplayer and watch tv shows I missed! That doesn't even work on my pc! Must dash - I'm catching up on mistresses!

What can you do with it? You can use mumsnet!

Here are a few of my favourite/most used features:

Facebook: Free, easy to use app.
Maps: Google maps - you can locate yourself or an address. You can get directions and - best of all - as you're travelling you can watch yourself as a blue dot moving on the screen! So if you get a bit lost you can easily see where you are and where you're going.
Count It Off: An application I downloaded (I think it was free) which I use to enter everything I eat and count calories, as well as tracking my weight. On the home page it shows me how many more calories I am allowed to eat today.
iPod: I've got all my music and audiobooks on here so I don't need an mp3 player.
Brushes/Whiteboard: Drawing tools - turn the screen into a sheet on which you can doodle with your finger. My son (3) LOVES it.
Safari: Web browser, you can view any website e.g. mumsnet! Zoom in and out by pinching your fingers together or pushing them apart.
Email: Nice and simple to use.
Text: Instead of having an inbox and a sent box you have "conversations" shown with each person you text so you can't forget what you said to them last or what they asked you.

This is just the beginning!

It is very easy to use generally. Unless you want to make a phone call, which takes longer than on your average phone! The touch screen feels lovely and is so intuitive to use.

Bad points:

The touch screen makes it impossible to use with gloves or to text without looking.
If you haven't got access to wireless internet wherever you happen to be it slows down a little.
Battery life isn't great, but to be fair I'm using it constantly!

In summary: I love it so so much and dp hates it because I never stop playing with it!
