Geeky stuff

I bought a new printer - I am deeply unhappy with it - what is the shop going to say when I take it back?

I am sat here amongst reams of badly printed, crumpled paper

It was a relatively expensive printer (a laser) & I think it's awful

I am gutted & I need one that works

What are they going to say?

How old is it, do you still have the receipt, where did you buy it from, does it actually work "badly" or actually does not do the job it was sold to do?

Detail, godddamit!

mrsmaidamess · 08/02/2009 19:17

Well if it prints badly and crumples the paper its not 'fit for the purpose' .

Get thee to the Returns department forthwith.

KatyMac · 08/02/2009 19:17

Thursday

It has managed 1 successful two sided print out of about 50 odd attempts (it crumples them or doesn't print one side)

It won't print card

Sorry from Staples

Back to shop and say "this doesn't work, please refund me".

Doesn't really matter what they say.

lou031205 · 08/02/2009 19:22

Go back, get a refund and then go out and buy this from comet.

It's an inkjet but will scan, copy and print photos beautifully. And it is cheaper by miles than the same printer at any online retailer. £100 less than PC World!

I bought it today, and within 20 minutes had it set up on the wireless network. Can you tell I'm impressed?

I don't think you will have much trouble returning the other one. It is new, it is faulty, so refund.

KatyMac · 08/02/2009 19:31

The print quality is excellent - just intermittent

Now the 2 sided thing is a deal breaker & the not printing on card is also a dealer breaker

It's a nightmare - it cost a fortune & they are not going to be happy about taking it back - there is the printer, 4 toner cartridges & the 'cover'

MmeLindt · 08/02/2009 19:32

It does not do the job that you bought it for, namely PRINT. So they have to take it back, whether they like it or not.

bruxeur · 08/02/2009 19:37

There is no emotion attached to this transaction apart from whatever you're bringing to it, KM - I strongly doubt a shopworker is going to be happy, sad, apprehensive, inspired or anything else about a return transaction. They'll take it, check the receipt, maybe grunt a little, then refund your card.

Think of it as a big pair of electric pants from M+S that don't work.

KatyMac · 08/02/2009 19:41

Look I took weeks to pick one; I read reviews, asked on here, checked prices everywhere

Then I went into the shop I was sold a completely different one

It doesn't do half I need & now what it does do it doesn't do well r consistantly

Oh course there are emotions involved

OP posts:
KatyMac · 08/02/2009 19:42

& I have used it loads

bruxeur · 08/02/2009 19:43

Well, I suppose you got your head turned by a fancy case and some smooth talk - and now you're feeling let down and betrayed. Thus weeps the fickle!

Flightattendant12 · 08/02/2009 19:44

Are you worried in case they are upset? I get that too. You need to think backwards - if you had sold someone a crappy printer you would want them to return it rather than seethe quietly, no?

You can be with them against the manufacturer, be on their side, smile at them, cry with them, but remain firm and don't accept a repair.

Are you sure you are using it right? That's the main thing to check, I'm sure you are, but I often f*ck up with new appliances and blame the shop, they always point it out and I end up looking stupid

bruxeur · 08/02/2009 19:45

When you say "used it loads", do you mean "used it loads and it's just stopped working", "used it loads and it's never worked properly" or "used it loads and broke it in the process"?

lou031205 · 08/02/2009 19:46

What is the printer, KatyMac?

I am deeply surprised that staples would have been the best place to buy, any printer, to be honest. Their prices are almost always very easy to beat.

KatyMac · 08/02/2009 19:51

It print photos well but intermittantly - I print loads

It prints document very well - I printed loads

It doesn't not print 2 sided - it should - I tried to print lots...

It doesn't print card - it should - I tried to print about 10..

No Staples had the only advantage which was that it was available, close, not snow bound & I urgently needed to print

The one I went in for was on special offer (half price - about £40 less than on-line)

It's a Samsung

OP posts:
KatyMac · 09/02/2009 11:44

They took it back & said it was faulty

Wow - customer service or what

I have got a new printer too, it's crap, - an HP C6380 but it cam virtually free with my new apple mac on a redemption offer, it's supposed to be wireless, it's brainless as far as I am concerned.

Mt faithful all in one Epson died just before Christmas after delivering around 10,000 copies! This particular one came free with an Epson laser, which is also still going strong, I hope!

nannynick · 09/02/2009 13:23

Good to hear that they took it back. If they haden't you could have had a word with trading standards, as things sold do need to be fit for purpose. Staples will make sure it is faulty... though by the sound of it, it is faulty - a paper feed issue of some kind.

So what have you got instead... the same thing again, or something different?

I'm surprised you went for a colour laser after our previous discussions. They are expensive but can work out quite low cost for full colour prints.

nannynick · 09/02/2009 13:25

My recommendation for lite business users is a Mono Laser (multi-function if you want Scanner). Then a dedicated photo printer - dye sub will be best and has a fixed cost per page.

Flightattendant12 · 09/02/2009 13:40

Oh I';m relieved for you Katymac. Have you gone for a different one now?

I've had three dell All in ones, because the original was so duff - they kept replacing it with the same one until the guarantee ran out. It only cost £20 though with the package.

I wanted a laser as I hate forking out for ink all the time, but parents have got an old epson inkjet they're giving me so will use that for now.

lou031205 · 09/02/2009 15:04

alibubbles, what is wrong with your HP6380? Mine is working perfectly. I have it set up wirelessly, and it prints brilliantly.

alibubbles · 09/02/2009 17:48

Lou, it prints when it feels like it, it may be because I have an Apple mac, and I am using a time machine which is a bit sci fi! It won't print if you are in a hurry, it seems to sense it and goes on strike, I was trying to print off Pizza Express vouchers on Saturday and DH said, I'll pay full price, I can't wait! He left, 2 minutes later it printed, so I made him come back for them! I can't complain it came free with the laptop!

We are networked to print wirelessly from any of the printers. They all appear in the print manager automatically, so it is there, even though it says, you are not connected!

Nannynick, my colour laser has been fantastic, i bought it 5 years ago now, to print DD's 18th birthday invites, all pink and black, it has run like a dream and very reasonably, Epson Aculaser 900, and we got an Epson all in one free with it.

My mono laser is 12 year old and has done 100,00 copies, and the Brother HL4 I gave my father, when I got this one, is still going strong and that is 18 years old!

lou031205 · 09/02/2009 17:59

That is odd. Perhaps it is the Mac.
