Do we have to call BT to password protect our wireless broadband?

Just got wireless.

At the moment I suspect people in our block of flats are piggybacking on our wireless.

How do we password protect our wireless router?

The router is a D-LINK, but the broadband is from BT.

No expert, but you should be able to do it using the router software. I'd google D-LINK password or security. Or wait for more constructive answers. Ours is Belkin, and we set the security settings on an html page linked to the router.

It should be OK but call the broadband hepline (08006007030 off the top of my head) to check. We didn't need to set up any extra security for ours.

It should either have come with some software, or more likely you have a brwser link (URL) to a page where you can change settings. Using that you should be able to add WEP security including a password. Have a look through the documentation to see if it points you in the right direction.

Don't let the buggers nick your bandwidth!

I think this may get you started, but if your Dlink is newer there may be differences or BT might have their own software installed making it look a little different.

Dlink Info

Since it's already working I assume you won't want to do Step 1, but the later steps do describe wireless security and may help.

Take a look, but don't rush to change anything until you're sure and have posted questions.

If you have a CD there may be a pdf manual. If you know the exact model it will be available online too.

Thanks to all.

Following the general trend of advice I focussed on the router, rather than BT, and their helpline talked me through it quite quickly.

We are now secure!
