Help, dopey DH put disc in floppy disc drive - now it's stuck!!

Title says it all really!!
DH is total technophobe, I bought him mp4 for xmas, which came with a disc to connect it to pc, because the disc was so tiny, he assumed it went in the 'little' disc tray, so now it's jammed, wont eject (small womder ).
Does anyone know a way to free it without costing me a fortune?
Not only can I not use the floppy tray now, cant download any music as pc doesnt recognise mp4.

Do you mean some sort of Solid State Disc (SSD) slot?

If so, and if wiggling didn't work, you would probably have to take it apart, which would invalidate the warranty.

You might have to return it to the manufacturer and pay for a repair to protect your investment!

VirginBoffinMum · 28/12/2008 15:47

If it is a normal floppy disk drive on a PC, it is eay to replace this yourself so just buy another one from Maplins or wherever, or even get hold of an external floppy disk drive and plug it in.

BettySwollux · 28/12/2008 19:48

The computer is a few years old now, had the insides rebuilt a few months back as mother board died, so not worried about warranty.
I've never actually used the floppy disc drive, so dont really care it that goes up the spout, pc has dvd rewriter (also unused) but there if I need to back up data, etc.
Does anyone know how I can get this disc out?
(I have no idea what a SSD is btw, it's sort of a mini cd, but its jammed right in there).

OK then, it sounds like you have jammed some sort of mini CD-ROM into the floppy disk drive?

If so and you are not worried about consequences, then just get a flatheaded screwdriver or even a ruler, and wiggle about and try to extract the disc slowly and carefully. This will probably work. With a bit of luck you won't scratch the CD-ROM.

Failing that take the PC case off (unplug PC first!) and just unplug the floppy disk driver and replace with a new one. Dead easy. Then put case back on. Meanwhile dissect old case at leisure by unscrewing random available screws, and extract CD-ROM from there.

Another option is just to order another copy of the CD-ROM and leave well enough alone in terms of the floppy disk drive.

We used to use a knife or something flat where I worked years ago but I would unplug first. Or you could unscrew the top cover off it and get it that way.

VirginBoffinMum · 28/12/2008 23:12

Sorry, I meant to say dissect old Floppy Disk Drive not case.

SparklyBaubleFeast · 28/12/2008 23:12

hav eyou tried pressing the eject button really hard? or turning off pc?

catinthehat1 · 28/12/2008 23:18

If it is an old style floppy disc drive, unfold a paperclip, and poke the end in the tiny little hole on the front of the drive that is exactly the diameter of paper clip wire to release the mechanism

Ha-hah!!!
Got it with cocktail stick and tweezers.
Thanks ladies.
Doesnt matter what the problem is, MN always my 1st port of call and always a good solution.
Now, if you could all tell me how to make 16mo DS2 sleep all night, how to stop 11yo DS1 from prematurely turning into grumpy teenager and how to get DH to wipe the bench after making a cuppa, my life will be complete LOL.

Have you considered a career in neurosurgery???

Re: 16mo, make bedtime a bit later, give baby late milky drink and warm bath, put baby in sleep sack thing, and then use ear plugs yourself and ignore baby until morning.

re: DS1, take out once a week for a mum and son date and do the qualidee time thing; praise frequently for good behaviour, espeically in front of other people.

re: Wiping bench after cuppa, set up tray to contain cuppa making mess and wash at end of each day.

Sorted!!

BettySwollux · 30/12/2008 21:33

VBM, Yes, I am in fact a neurosurgeon, god only knows how I couldnt figure how to get a stuck disc out after rooting around in peoples brains all day (joke, am a SAHM and a bit of a slattern ).
Re 16mo, thats pretty much what I do, apart from earplugs, as (un)luckily, am deaf as a post when I take my hearing aid out, so up to DH to hear and give me a nudge. (tried ignoring him once, was hell on earth, got himself into right old state, so happy to go and soothe him till he decides to sleep through on his own.
RE DS1, try to do that, even if its just a dvd night, he's still a stroppy shitdarling.
Re DH, bugger that, I'll keep hurling the dishcloth at him and screaming, WIPE IT UP!! It'll get through eventually.

LOL!!

I had a huge falling out with DS1 (10 nearly 11) the other day over an eye-rolling incident that culminated in me absolutely pointlessly smacking him , so I took him out for an Indian at our fave restaurant to make up. It helped a lot and we are firm friends again.
