Aaaargh, my hotmail has been hacked, what shall I do?

Someone has hacked into my hotmail, and sent messages to everybody in my contact list.

I don't think there's any spyware on my puter, I've run a couple of scans (Mac osX user), so maybe it's just the hotmail end of things? [hopeful emoticon]

I've changed the password already, anything else I need to do or watch out for?

This happened to another MNetter a little while back, see www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=geeky_stuff&threadid=638215-HOTMAIL-think-someone-has-hacked-in-What-ca n-we-do#12992820

Make sure that the password that you've changed it to is a strong password - eg a combo of upper/lower case. For example P455word (password)... Obviously don't use password!!

Contact hotmail.

If it's a variant of the online Nigerian (I think 419) fraud you may need to contact the police.

This happened to DH a while ago.
He wasn't as fortunate as you and couldn't re-enter hotmail to change password because the Nigerians had changed his password and just took over his whole account emailing all and sundry for money to rescue him!!
In the end, Hotmail people responded to our emails and we managed to change passwords.
You might want to do the following:

  • send emails to your contacts telling them to ignore emails from your kidnapped self in Nigeria requesting money.
  • the biggest problem is identity theft. we joined some experian credit thing for £1 for first month. If someone tries to take out credit in your name, they notify you.
  • some of our emails had people's bank details and addresses within them, so we notified people to keep an eye on their accounts.

we really should have reported it to police but never got round to it.

I don't think the emails were nigerian money requesting ones (and we're familiar with the genre, as dh travels to africa for work a lot). Someone forwarded me one, it appeared to be from a chinese person trying to sell people electronic goods, with a link to a website.

Frogs - just back from visit to parents and found "your message" but when I read it thought it was very odd as the spelling and grammar weren't you at all. Hope you are able to get it sorted and it doesn't cause you any problems. Horrid isn't it?
