I bought an ipod this morning, but I can't get it to work

We have windows 2000 on our PC. Onager kindly gave me a link to download itunes as the usual one wouldn't work.

But now a message comes up that the ipod cannot be used because it needs itunes version 8 or later.

Any idea what I can do?

Also, I cannot get the music stored on the PC Windows media player to download either.

I am sooooo disappointed

That IS disappointing

I just checked and the requirements for the Ipod Nano do say XP or Vista and Itunes 8

There may be other ways to get the music to the Ipod, but I'm not sure off hand. Any Ipod owners about?

I know it sounds daft just for this, but is it time to upgrade to XP? I don't recommend Vista, but XP is very stable and I'm afraid Win2000 is getting on a bit now.

Oh no!

How do we upgrade to XP? Is it difficult? Or expensive?

we called someone out of the paper who upgraded our old pc, wasn't too much, about £50 iirc.

Kevlarhead · 25/11/2008 17:19

I don't think XP is being sold anymore... which may mandate an upgrade to Vista.

CrushaGrape · 25/11/2008 17:28

have you tried downloading an earlier version of Itunes instead, like this one?

support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes_7_3_2_for_Windows_2000

Would anything else - like a cheap MP3 player work on the nano?

When I transferred the music from Windows Media Player it seemed to transfer, and there is only 7.2gb left on the nano, but I can't access it at all on the nano.

Any ideas?

Thanks too!

oh, sorry, that may not be relevant if the Ipod itself says it needs Itunes 8. That's such a bummer. I am dismayed for you.

If your PC is old it may not even support an upgrade to Vista which is fussy about hardware apparently.

You can still get XP, but it's harder to find a place that will do it now even though lots of people don't want to go to Vista. One day soon the only place XP will exist will be the free copies on piratebay.

bigTillyMint · 25/11/2008 18:31

I think our PC is about 6 or 7 years old - is that old?

Why is life so difficult when technology is involved?

Microsoft do a Vista upgrade advisor to test hardware is up to running Vista in case anyone else is interested. It won't do you any good I'm afraid since the tester won't even run on Windows 2000.
I tried it recently out of curiosity and it said my newest PC (2007) would just scrape by, but it wasn't impressed.

7 years is a little old yes. One of mine is actually a little older and does run XP successfully, but it's a bit slow.

onager · 25/11/2008 18:55

I'm told that mediamonkey will handle syncing to the ipod nano from Windows 2000 and it's free. I have no way to test it, but it's probably worth a look.

MrVibrating · 25/11/2008 21:08

Please don't cry

onager is partially right, you will be able to use MediaMonkey to manage the tunes on your iPod, but unfortunately a new iPod has to be formatted by iTunes before it will work at all. And if you want to use it on a Windows machine, it must be formatted using Windows iTunes (not on a Mac). Do you have a friend with a newer Windows machine?

bigTillyMint · 25/11/2008 21:20

Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah

My DH had his work lap-top - which he thought wasn't able to connect to the internet (DURRR).......... and it has XP on it........

It is all sorted! - I have got an itunes account and downloaded my party mix - we can dance on Saturday!!!!
