Can I cast TV shows from phone to tablet?

I'm looking to buy a tablet for use during a seven-hour car journey so my daughter can watch downloaded TV programmes.

Does anyone know if it's possible to control this on my phone? I.e. If I was sat in the front passenger seat, could I start and stop a TV programme on my phone which is then cast to the tablet in the back seat? - Like a remote control?

Don't know much about tablets, sorry!

FWIW I have an android (Samsung) phone. Thanks!

Can’t you just download the streaming app on the tablet?

Hi @Blueeberry , thanks for your reply. I honestly don't know anything about tablets - I've never had one. Would this app solve this issue then?

I've just re-read my post and I think I sounded a bit confusing. What I'd like to be able to do is start and stop TV programmes on the tablet FROM my phone - like a remote control. So, if I'm not sitting next to my daughter in the car, I can still put shows/films on for her.
Hope that makes more sense, sorry.

I don’t think this is possible.

No, it’s not possible and is it really necessary?

PurpleThistle7 · 25/04/2026 10:10

I don’t think so and I don’t know why you’d need to? Download Netflix or whatever on the tablet and then your daughter can put on whatever is downloaded.

She's only just turned two and her little arms struggle to reach the tablet from her seat.

Just put something on for her and then change it when you need? This sounds OTT

Fagin99 · 25/04/2026 11:00

Like I said, I've never owned a tablet so it was just a query as to whether this could be an option.

I'm surprised the tech companies haven't thought of this yet; especially for journeys when you'll be on endless motorways for most of the day and might be not be able to sit next to your child.

Thanks for your replies, anyway. I'll just have to think of something else.

No, that's not really a thing. You can put things on for her and then use the accessibility options to lock down the tablet so she can't turn them off, but otherwise you'll need to set it up so she's ready before you set off, or let her hold it and pass it to you when you want to change things.

Edited to add: It's not that they haven't thought of it, it's that it's not a very in-demand feature, and it opens up more avenues to abuse. A bit like Airdrop, and Bluetooth, and Airtags. Anything you introduce that can track or control a different device brings a whole host of issues with it.

Chocolatecoffeecup · 25/04/2026 11:06

If you're not driving then surely you can grab the tablet and change it for her? If you are driving then it's not appropriate anyway.

Not much help for the OP, but you can do it between an iPhone and an iPad, provided they are on the same wi-fi network, which might be an additional complication if your car doesn't have wi-fi already.

Could create a hotspot wifi for the car from the phone - I’ve done this with Apple devices, I know it works on Android but can’t recall the specific settings.

Once the hotspot is set up Chromecast is probably an option for a pair of Android devices. Android isn’t my home port but I know there are apps to make this easier.

The other option would be to install something like TeamViewer on each device to gain full remote control of the tablet (its a bit fiddly on a phone screen but usable).

WednesdaysChild73 · 25/04/2026 17:24

Yes you can, you need a chrome cast. They have been discontinued but you can still get on Amazon and CEX etc.

Sorry ignore that I, I read your post completely wrong 🤦🏻‍♀️

Fagin99 · 26/04/2026 11:25

Thanks very much for your replies. A WiFi hot-spot and/or TeamViewer are excellent ideas and I shall certainly experiment with these.

I think because I can easily cast from my phone to my TV (and fully control it from the phone like a remote), I wondered if the same technology is possible between phone and tablet. As you quite rightly say though, WiFi may be required.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

(And no, I definitely wouldn't be doing this whilst driving!)

Just reach behind and change the show for her? I did this until mine were old enough to do it themselves

Fagin99 · 26/04/2026 23:12

It's a rear-facing car seat so the tablet will be attached to the front of the rear seat, so no option to reach behind, unfortunately.

For a long journey like that TBH you will likely find you end up in the back with her. I always did with my DC when they were little. That way you can also just take the tablet out of the holder and change the programme etc if you want to.

BertieBotts · 02/05/2026 15:41

Another thing to consider would be going a bit more old fashioned and using a portable DVD player with remote control.
