Shrubs for low quality soil

Soil is basically builders rubble. When planting I usually fork out about a 75cm width&depth, pulling out big stones, ground roots and fill around plant with quality compost. Soil is clay. Not possibly to dig, so hard work. Plants that have grown ok are pittosporum, euonymous, st johns wort and pieris

Anyway, neighbours have removed their hedge and I'd like to plant some shrubs near the boundary. Any other ideas, nothing too big.

Hydrangea, viburnum and the gorgeous viburnum carlesii.

Lavender is very resilient, and usually works well in pretty rubbish soil. Looks/smells lovely, just trim them after the season to avoid them getting woody

Following because I have same soil as you OP. Can you get this moved to the gardening topic? Might get more replies

Buddleia will put down roots around builders rubble. Woe betide you if you ever want to get rid of it though - once the root is wrapped around broken bricks and stuff, you’d need a JCB to dig it out.
