How do I stop Windows automatically updating???

FAQ · 12/06/2008 09:33

Got up this morning, after crashing out last night forgetting to save a game I was playing and/or switching the computer off, to find that the computer had restarted.

Turns out Windows had installed a new update (or something) and had automatically restarted.

As a consequence I've lost literally HOURS of stuff on the game (yes I know it's rather sad that I'm concerned that I've lost progress on a game but that's not the point ).

How do I stop it doing it automatically??

I don't know personally but DH turned ours off this morning. I'll check with him tonight if you haven't had an answer before....

I don't know -mine did an automatic update this morning, I tried to work out how to stop it but couldn't.

It basically told me it was going to switch off and re-start in 4mins 30secs and that I could lose unsaved work.

There was a drop down box with an option like "Remind me in 10mins" but it wouldn't let me click on it

Control Panel - Automatic updates. Just turn it off and visit Microsoft Update site once a month or so when it suits you.

The option I have set is "download updates ..., but let me choose when to install them".

It will pop up one of those little messages from the taskbar when it's got something to install, but it's not too intrusive.

Best not to turn it off completely.

Thanks

I knew it was possible to have it to have it let me know when it had something to install/switch off but didn't have a clue how.
