I still don't see how passkeys are different from passwords. Also, since I understand they are tied to your device, what happens if you lose your device or change to a new one?

Passkeys are quite different from passwords even though both are used to access your accounts. Passwords are strings of characters you create and have to remember or manage, but they can be guessed, stolen, or phished. Passkeys work using cryptographic keys a public key on the website and a private key stored securely on your device. When you log in, your device proves your identity through the private key using biometrics like fingerprint or face recognition, so no password is sent across the internet. This makes passkeys much safer from hacking.

If you lose your device or get a new one, passkeys can usually be restored through cloud sync services linked to your account, such as Apple iCloud or Google Account. This means as long as you set up syncing, your passkeys move with you securely to the new device. If your passkeys are stored only on a single device without backup, losing that device means losing access, so setting up backups or syncing is important.

In short, passkeys let you log in quickly and safely without remembering passwords, but you do need to make sure your keys are backed up or synced when switching devices.
